SMU Track & Field Opens the 2020 season with the Leonard Hilton Invite on Friday from the University of Houston's Yeoman Fieldhouse.
Â
"We are excited to see where the team is at," said first year head coach 'A Havahla Haynes. "Our sprints, jumps, hurdles & multi event women have worked hard over the last few months to get to this point fit and healthy. The distance women have kept their fitness over break. The entire team is ready to put down the first mark of the season!"
Â
The Meet begins at 10 am with the high jump. The first SMU track event of the day will be the 60 m, slated for 12:30.
 Â
Seniors Hannah Miller and Chelsea Francis enter the season as two of the most decorated track athletes. Miller's indoor season has already begun as she participated in the Boston University Season Opener back in December. Miller broke her fifth school record in the 5000 meter, topping Katie Swords' 23- year old school record. Last season, Miller won three medals at the AAC Indoor, in the 3000, 5000 and the DMR. The Mustangs would finish in 4th of 12 teams at the conference championships.
Â
Francis is the conference reigning champion in the 60m and a record holder in several SMU categories including the 60m. Her top time of 7.25 earned her a spot at the NCAA Championship and All-America status.
Â
Chika Iwuamadi returns after a stellar freshman season. Iwuamadi broke the SMU Indoor 400m record and took home two medals at the AAC Meet. Junior Cassie Ackemann has won a pair of medals at the AACs in the high jump, winning silver the past season and bronze the year before.
Â
The Leonard Hilton is the first of six events on the Indoor slate before the AAC Championships in Birmingham (Feb 28-29) and the subsequent NCAA Championships (Mar. 13-14).
