Mustangs Post Three Top-20 National Marks At Season Opener

HOUSTON, Texas (SMU) - SMU Track and Field posted three top-20 national marks on the opening day of the 2020 season on Friday at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational.
 
The 4x400 of team of Ashton Woods, Chika Iwuamadi, Chelsea Francis and Annette Bolomboy recorded a top-15 mark in the NCAA this season with a time of 3:44.72, easily winning the meet. The time was the third best mark by an SMU squad. Woods, Iwuamadi and Francis were part of the team last season that ran the fastest SMU time in the event.  
 
Hannah Miller opened 2020 with a second-place finish in the Mile. Miller ran just under five minutes in a time of 4:59.40.
 
Chelsea Francis picked up where she left off in 2019 by blowing away the field with a time of 7.30 in the prelims and a first-place finish in the final with a 7.30. Her time puts her tied for eighth in the NCAA in the 60m.
 
Chika Iwuamadi set a personal record in the 200m with a time of 24.24 Iwuamadi finished in fifth, third best among the collegiate competitors. Her time slots her 15th in the NCAA.  
 
Junior Ashton Woods advanced to the finals of the 60m hurdles by setting a personal record (8.98) in the prelims.  Woods topped it in the finals with a time of 8.93.
 
A total of four Mustang 4x400 teams represented SMU in Houston. The second fastest SMU squad of Jordanae Scott, Whitney Williams, Sharone' Johnson and Olivia Witt ran a time of 3:55.63.
 
Atipa Mabonga competed in the long and triple jump, finishing in 11th of 27 in the long jump with a distance of 5.33m, 0.14 off her personal best. She finished in fourth in the triple with a mark of 11.80m. Two multi-athletes competed in the shot put with freshman Olivia Dobson, throwing for a distance of 12.58 in her third collegiate attempt. Dobson would finish in third.
 
Across Friday's events, seven athletes made their SMU Track & Field debut. After an off weekend, the Mustangs are back in action at the University of Houston's G5/Mid Major Invitational, Jan. 31-Feb. 1.
