DALLAS (SMU) - SMU men's tennis won a pair of matches on Saturday to improve to 5-1 on the season. The Mustangs rallied to win their first road match of the season with a 4-3 victory over Lamar before defeating UT Tyler 6-1 in the night cap at the SMU Tennis Complex.

SMU went on the road for an 11 a.m. match against Lamar at the Thompson Family Tennis Center in Beaumont. The Cardinals took the doubles point behind wins on line one and three.

Singles play didn't start well for the Mustangs as Lamar controlled the early action. The Cardinals were up on four early courts though the Mustangs rallied to split the first sets with Jordi Redelijk pulling out a tiebreaker win. SMU found itself in a 3-0 hole after Lamar won against Tomas Vaise and Michael Smith on No. 3 and No. 6.

Carles Sarrio captured the first SMU point thanks to second set tiebreaker victory, 6-4, 7-6 (6). Huntley Allen rallied to win a desperately needed second set, forcing a third. Redelijk and Caleb Chakravarthi lost their second sets forcing SMU to win the remaining three third sets.

Huntley pulled away from a tight third to win the second point of the day. Chakravarthi rolled 6-2 to square the match and put the attention on Redelijk on No. 5. The freshman rose to the occasion with a 6-1 third set, completing the comeback, 4-3, for SMU.

Everyone made it back to the SMU Tennis Complex for the night half of the doubleheader against UT Tyler. It started the same with the Mustangs failing to win the doubles point. Chakravarthi and Ethan Leon were the lone SMU winners in doubles.

UT Tyler threatened taking two of the first sets. Carles Sarrio had no trouble on line one though, winning his second match of the day, 6-1, 6-1. SMU went in front thanks to Leon's, 6-0, 6-1 win on line two. With the other tight matches on the remaining courts, Redelijk gave the Mustangs breathing room with a 6-2, 6-4 victory on No. 3.

Captain Gardiner Perotti rallied to win his first set 6-4 before clinching the match for the Mustangs on No. 5. Jose Juan Bianchi rebounded from a 3-6 first set and won the remaining sets, 6-1, 6-2. Avery Pennywell gutted out a lengthy and tight win on court six. After falling in set one 2-6, Pennywell won the middle, 7-5, before finishing strong with a 6-3 win. SMU finished off the 6-1 win with a sweep of singles, only dropping a pair of first sets.

The SMU Tennis Complex is loaded with action next weekend as SMU Men's Tennis plays three matches and Women's Tennis plays a pair. It all begins with a quadruple-header with the men taking on Oklahoma Baptist and Portland on Saturday and the women facing Colorado State and McNeese. The men return on Sunday to take on UTSA.
