Box Score NEW ORLEANS, La. (SMU) – SMU men's tennis finished up its Louisiana road trip with a 6-1 loss to Tulane on Sunday afternoon at the City Park Pepsi Tennis Center.
In a match delayed by rain, the Mustangs jumped on top of the Green Wave with a victory in doubles.
Juan Jose Bianchi and
Jan-Simon Vrbsky pushed past Tulane on No. 3 for a 6-4 win.
Carles Sarrio and
Ethan Leon were down 0-2 before putting together a strong finish to win the doubles point. On the remaining court,
Caleb Chakravarthi and
Huntley Allen rallied from 0-3 to put together a competitive match.
Huntley Allen was forced to retire from his match on No. 4 after suffering an injury.
Ethan Leon was banged up throughout his match but hung in there to force an interesting second set before Tulane earned their second point.
On No. 5,
Jordi Redelijk dropped his first set, 6-0 but shook it off to win 6-2 in the second. The back-and-forth second set turned Tulane's way near the close.
Gardiner Perotti came out on the wrong end of a first-set comeback. He nearly turned the tables in the second but Tulane was able to clinch the match.
The remaining matches on No. 1 and No. 2 were played until their conclusion. Sarrio won set one over No. 90 Hammish Stewart before the nationally ranked opponent rallied for a second set and a third.
Caleb Chakravarthi fought all the way until the end in an emotional match with No. 49 Ewan Moore. The junior fought through four potential Tulane set points in the first before dropping his tiebreaker. Chakravarthi dominated the second to force a full third set. The pair traded breaks putting the match in the hands of a tiebreaker which Tulane won 7-3 to complete the 6-1 win.
The Mustangs return to the SMU Tennis Complex for a three-match weekend. USF comes to town on Friday and Pomona Pitzer on Saturday. No. 11 TCU meets SMU to renew the rivalry at 2 pm on Saturday.
