DALLAS (SMU) – The Mustangs split a doubleheader against Pomona-Pitzer and No. 12 TCU on Saturday at the SMU Tennis Complex.
SMU started the day with its tenth win of the season taking down the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens, 6-1. SMU scratched together a doubles' win behind victories from lines one and two.
Tomas Vaise and
Eddie Ross won 6-4 on No. 2 and
Jan-Simon Vrbsky and
Juan Jose Bianchi rallied to win in a tiebreaker, 7-1, on line three.
Pomona-Pitzer played close in the first set on five courts.
Gardiner Perotti was the exception cruising to a 6-0 first followed by a 7-5 win in the second.
Jordi Redelijk pulled out a tiebreaker in his first set while
Ethan Leon won, 6-3 in his first.
Kyla Pham fell 6-3, 7-6 on court six, forcing a tiebreaker in the second after digging out of an early hole.
Ethan Leon put SMU one win away from clinch with his victory on No. 2.
Michael Smith clinched the match with a win on No. 5. After losing the first 3-6, Smith won a second-set tiebreaker before a shutout victory in the third set. Redelijk and
Juan Jose Bianchi won third sets to complete the 6-1 win.
In the Metroplex rivalry match, the Mustangs met up with the 12
th-ranked Horned Frogs and gave TCU all they could handle in doubles.
Ethan Leon and
Carles Sarrio earned a ranked win thanks to a 6-3 victory over No. 19 Gray/Fearnley. After TCU won on No. 3,
Caleb Chakravarthi and Vaise lost the match late to a ranked doubles duo.
TCU would win three singles matches before the match was called at 4-0. On each of the three unfinished courts, the Mustangs held first-set leads against nationally-ranked opponents. Chakravarthi won his first, 6-4, against No. 50, Sarrio pulled out a tiebreaker against No. 79 and Leon was a 7-5 winner on line four.
Next up, the Mustangs head down to Houston to face Rice and Valpo on March 1.
