SMU men's tennis hosts the SMU Indoor Invitational from Friday to Sunday with Utah and Wichita State coming to Dallas. The Mustangs will host Utah at 4 p.m. on Friday and Wichita State on Saturday at noon.
SMU opened the 2021 season with a 2-3 weekend. The Mustangs swept Prairie View, 7-0, in a pair of matches on the first day of the season. The team took on No. 6 Texas in Austin on Saturday and lost 7-0 before dropping a doubleheader to the No. 15 Baylor Bears in Waco on Monday. Heading into the weekend, the Mustangs have won their last nine home matches against unranked teams, a streak that dates back to 2019.
Along with the SMU matches, Utah and UTA have a Saturday match at the SMU Tennis Complex and Utah and Wichita State play on Sunday. All matches at the SMU Tennis Complex are closed to the general public.
ABOUT UTAH
Utah opened the season with a 7-0 sweep of Grand Canyon. They finished last season 12-5 before the season was cut short. They were slated to play SMU before the season's cancellation. In the last full season, they made the NCAA Tournament.
SERIES HISTORY (UTAH)
The Mustangs and Utes have met once before in 1996. The Mustangs won the home matchup, 6-1.
ABOUT WICHITA STATE
Wichita State opened the season with a 2-1 weekend with wins over Nebraska-Omaha and Oral Roberts and a loss to No. 14 Oklahoma State. The pairing of Marius Fossa and Murjel Dellien is ranked No. 32 in the country. The Shockers posted a 12-5 record during 2019-20.
SERIES HISTORY (WICHITA STATE)
The Mustangs have a 4-2 advantage in all-time matchups against the Shockers. SMU fell at home, 4-0, in the last meeting in 2019. A 2020 meeting was canceled when the season was cut short.
UP NEXT
The Mustangs host Southeastern Oklahoma State and UT Tyler on Jan. 29. The squad then hits the road to face Oklahoma in Norman.
