SMU men's tennis plays host to a Friday doubleheader against Southeastern Oklahoma State and UT Tyler before hitting the road for a Sunday showdown against No. 23 Oklahoma.
Off to a 3-1 record at home, the Mustangs continue the homestand on Friday with matches at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Facing their fourth ranked road matchup, SMU travels to Normal for a matchup with the 23rd-ranked Sooners slated for 11 a.m. from the Headington Family Tennis Center.
The Mustangs took down Pac 12 opponent Utah last weekend at the SMU Tennis Complex. SMU topped the Utes 5-2 starting out with a doubles win and fighting through a lengthy match to get their first win over a Pac 12 team since 2015. SMU then fell, 5-2, to Wichita State the following day.
ABOUT OKLAHOMA
The Sooners are off to a 2-2 start to the 2021 season with three matchups coming against ranked opponents. The two losses have come to No. 13 Tennessee and No. 6 TCU while the Sooners topped No. 12 Wake Forest, 4-0. Mason Beiler is the Sooners highest ranked singles player at No. 69.
The Sunday matchup with the Sooners is the Mustangs third ranked road matchup of the young season. The Mustangs finished on the wrong end of a trio of 7-0 scores when they headed to Austin and Waco to face Baylor and Texas.
ABOUT UT TYLER
The Patriots open their dual match season on Friday with a match against Harding in Dallas before facing the Mustangs in the second half of the doubleheader. UT Tyler went 1-7 last season including a match with the Mustangs. SMU topped the Patriots, 6-1 by winning the doubles point.
ABOUT SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA STATE
Friday's match is the season opener for the Savage Storm and their first match since the 2020 season was cut short. Southeastern went 10-3 in 2020 including 4-1 in conference play.
DOUBLES UPDATE
The team that's won doubles has won the overall dual match in all seven Mustang matchups in 2021. The Mustangs have had their most success at line two, putting together a 4-2 record at that position.
SINGLES UPDATE
Julian Steinhausen leads the Mustangs with four dual match singles wins during the season, racking up wins at lines one, two and four. The Mustangs are 4-3 at both lines three and lines five. SMU is 19-14 against unranked opponents during the season.
UP NEXT
The Mustangs head to Salt Lake City for a rematch with Utah. The Mustangs and Utes faced off in Dallas last weekend with SMU taking the win, 5-2.
