LAST GAME (W, 67-65 vs Memphis on Jan. 28): DALLAS (AP) — Yor Anei scored four of his eight points in the last 3:21 — each time putting SMU back in the lead — and the Mustangs held off Memphis 67-65 on Thursday night. Feron Hunt scored 17 points and Emmanuel Bandoumel had 15 for SMU (9-3, 5-3 American Athletic Conference). Ethan Chargois added 13 points. Tyson Jolly had six rebounds. Kendric Davis, the Mustangs leading scorer entering the game, scored six and had eight assists. Memphis trailed by 10 at halftime after scoring a season-low 23 points in the opening 20 minutes. But Boogie Ellis kicked off 21-4 surge with a 3-pointer that erased a 16-point SMU advantage and put the Tigers into a 59-58 lead seven minutes later. Landers Nolley II had 19 points for the Tigers (9-6, 5-3). DeAndre Williams added 17 points and 11 rebounds. Ellis scored nine and Alex Lomax had eight assists.

THE SERIES VS. HOUSTON (33-53) (31-53+): UH won the first matchup this season 74-60 in Dallas on Jan. 3 after the programs split last season with each winning at home. In the previous six season, SMU swept the 2014-15 and 2016-17, was swept by UH in 2017-18 and 2018-19, and the rivals split 2015-16 and 2019-20. The teams spent 21 years together in the Southwest Conference (1975-1996) and eight as C-USA opponents (2005-2013) before moving to The American. Houston held a 28-14 advantage in the SWC and a 12-3 margin in C-USA games. SMU leads 2-1 in NCAA Tournament play. The Ponies won NCAA Regional matchups in 1956 and 1965, but lost in 1967. The eighth-ranked Mustangs won 89-76 over 17th-ranked Houston in the 1956 NCAA Tournament. SMU eventually advanced to the 1956 Final Four. The two met in the last SWC Tournament at Reunion Arena in Dallas with SMU notching a 62-57 win over the Cougars in 1996. (+30-53 officially, wins in 2013-14 later vacated).

LAST MEETING VS HOUSTON (L, 74-60 vs No. 5/5 Houston on Jan. 3): DALLAS (AP) -- Quentin Grimes hit a go-ahead 3-pointer to ignite a 10-0 run to start the second half for No. 5 Houston in a 74-60 victory over SMU. That 3-pointer by Grimes from the top of the key to put Houston (8-1, 3-1) ahead to stay on the first shot after halftime and Justin Gorham then made a 3. Grimes also had a layup and two free throws in that game-turning run in just over 2 1/2 minutes. Marcus Sasser led Houston with 17 points, and Gorham had 11 points and 19 rebounds. DeJon Jarreau scored 15 points. Kendric Davis led SMU (6-1, 2-1) with 23 points. Feron Hunt had 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Ethan Chargois scored 10 points. Grimes finished with 11 points. He was scoreless with only one shot before halftime, when he played only eight minutes after two early fouls. SMU had the largest lead of the first half when Chargois followed his missed 3-pointer that would have snapped a tie with assists on consecutive impressive baskets that made it 30-25 with 2:39 left in the first half, though they led by only one at the break. Hunt rebounded the missed 3 and got the ball back to Chargois at the top of the key, for his quick pass to Davis for a tiebreaking 3. Chargois then had a steal, but instead of going all the way to score on the breakaway, he did an underhand scoop to bank the ball off the backboard to Hunt for a dunk.

RETURN TO SENDER: Yor Anei has 22 blocks in his 8 games this season. He is averaging 2.32 blocks for his career, which is 8th among active student-athletes. He has had multiple blocks in 42 of 72 career games (6 of 8 this season). His 5 blocks at Temple tied the SMU record for blocks in an AAC game (Ben Moore 5 vs Cincinnati 1-7-2016).
