Men’s Golf’s Thompson, Ovard Win Matches Against TCU

Jan 30

WESTLAKE, Texas – SMU's Justin Thompson and Dawson Ovard each won their matches, and three Mustangs halved their matches, but TCU won the men's golf match play event between the schools 3-2-3.

Thompson defeated the Horned Frogs' Gustav Frimodt 2&1, winning each of the par-5s at the par 71 / 7,162-yard Vaquero Country Club. Thompson birdied three of the four par-5s, and eagled the other one. Thompson is now unbeaten in three match play events in his career, with a 2-0-1 record.

Ovard won his match over TCU's Brandon Massey 2&1, ending the match by going 2 up on the 16th then halving the 17th for the victory.

Ollie Osborne, Ben Wong and Prescott Butler each halved their matches for SMU. Osborne, whose match-play exploits contain five straight wins in the format to reach the final match at the 2020 U.S. Amateur, rallied back from a 4 down deficit against Jacob Skov Olesen on the 11th tee to halve his match.

Wong won the 18th hole with a par to halve his match against Justin Gums. Wong was playing in his first competitive event for SMU since November 2019. Butler came back from 4 down after eight holes to tie Trevor Brown. Butler was competing in his first event for SMU after transferring from Alabama.

Three Mustangs lost their matches, as Mac Meissner fell 4&3 to Mateo de Oliveira, Noah Goodwin lost 4&3 to Filippo Celli and Nathan Petronzio dropped his match 5&4 to Aymeric Laussot.

The Mustangs return to action February 15-17 at The Prestige, hosted by Cal Davis at PGA West's Norman Course in Palm Desert, California.
