IRVING, Texas (AAC/SMU) - The Mustangs claimed all four American Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors after shutting out both No. 8 Tulsa and UCF during last week's matches,
the league announced on Monday.
Skage Simonsen, the week's Offensive Player of the Week, earned his first award of the season after completing his second career hat trick during SMU's 5-0 victory at UCF on Sunday night. The senior scored on all three of his shots on goal after attempting a match-high total six shots on the night. Simonsen logged the match-winner in the 23rd minute and added a pair of second-half insurance goals in the 60th and 84th to help defeat the Knights.
Brandon Terwege was named the Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after playing all but four of the week's minutes as he helped the Mustang defense hold American regular-season champion Tulsa to a scoreless draw on Oct. 27 before shutting out UCF on Oct. 31. The Mustangs limited their opponents to seven total shots on frame in a pair of shutouts, with UCF managing only one attempt on goal.
Cole Johnson claimed his second Goalkeeper of the Week title after earning a pair of clean sheets for SMU in an unbeaten conference week. The sophomore made six saves in the contest against No. 8 Tulsa, including a pair of stops in the overtime periods, to earn the draw with the Golden Hurricane. He then turned aside the lone UCF shot on goal during the first half to blank the Knights.
Mads Westergren earned his first league award as he was named the Rookie of the Week. Westergren shined for SMU as he started in both of the week's matches, going the distance in the scoreless draw with No. 8 Tulsa on Oct. 27 before jumping in on the offensive end of a 5-0 shutout of UCF on Oct. 31. The freshman turned in 68 minutes on the Mustang backline and served the primary assist on Simonsen's match-winning goal in the 23rd minute.
SMU closes out its regular season on Friday, Nov. 5 when they host Memphis at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium. The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start and will be shown on ESPN+.
