DALLAS, Texas (SMU/United Soccer Coaches) – Four SMU men's soccer players have been recognized by United Soccer Coaches as members of All-East Region teams. Senior standouts Knut Ahlander and Gabriel Costa were named to the Second Team, while junior Papa Ndoye and grad student Brandon Terwege notched spots on the Third Team.
Â
Costa and Ahlander return as All-East Region choices, having both received spots in 2019 on the First and Third teams, respectively. Ndoye is also becoming somewhat of a regular on the list, receiving honors for the second straight season after being named to the Second Team for the 2020-21 season. This marks the eighth consecutive season that at least one Mustang has been named to an all-region team of any type.
Â
Ahlander concluded his senior season starting all 15 games and leading the team in assists for the second time in his career with seven. The two-time AAC First Team selection logged over 1,400 minutes this season and scored one goal against Houston Baptist. Starting 63 games in four seasons, Ahlander has consistently proven to be one of the best players in the conference and region.
Â
Costa, a three-year starter at SMU, adds this honor to his already illustrious career. He is a former All-American Third Team selection, AAC Co-Midfielder of the Year, and AAC First Team selection. Additionally, he was included on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List for the 2020-21 season. Costa finished the season leading SMU in goals (8), assists (6), shots (53), and shots on goal (21). He also tallied four game-winners, one coming on a two-goal performance against No. 8 in the nation, Stanford.
Â
In yet another impressive season, Ndoye scored five goals and recorded two assists. His season included a stellar mid-September two-goal performance vs Temple where he recorded a season high six shots, including four on goal. The electric forward also joined Costa on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List for 2020-21. Ndoye has previously been awarded AAC Second Team and AAC All-Academic honors.
Â
Making his debut on the All-Region list is center back Brandon Terwege. A talented defender originally from Highland Village, Texas, Terwege made the AAC Second Team based on his outstanding performance this season. He started every game in 2021, recorded two goals and one assist, and led the Mustangs' backline to six clean sheets. Terwege has been a part of 20 clean sheets in his three years at SMU.
