DALLAS (SMU) – Nicole Stambo led a sweep of 1 meter, and the Mustangs posted seven total podium finishes on night one of the three-day American Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships held at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium.

Stambo led the field with a six-round 288.45 to win her first conference championship after a pair of all-conference honors in 2020. Teammates Katie Crown (285.50) and Taylor Ohlhauser (281.25) finished second and third, respectively, to complete the night one sweep for the Mustangs.

Gabi Grobler finished just off her career-best time in the 200-yard individual medley for second place with an NCAA B standard time of 1:59.43. Jenna Watson won the Consolation Final, while Janelle Gursoy was second.

Sprint Freestyler Alex Stevens continued to shine in her specialty, finishing third in the 50-yard freestyle. She covered the distance in a career-best 22.99 to lead three Mustangs in the Championship Final. Freshmen Johanna Gudmundsdottir (5th, 23.22) and Indra Vandenbussche (8th, 23.65) also scored in the A Final.

In the 500 free, Olivia Grossklaus picked up sixth-place points.

In relay action, SMU posted runner-up performances in both events contested on night one, with an exciting performance coming to close the evening. Stevens, clocked a 49.32 free split to help Grobler, Maddy Lewis and Grossklaus to a 3:41.53 in the 400-yard medley relay.

In the opening 200 free relay, Stevens, Gudmundsdottir, Vandenbussche and Sam Smith were narrowly out-touched at 1:30.74 for the win.

SMU is second in the team standings with 240 points. Houston leads the field with 307, Cincinnati is third (189) and Tulane is fourth (156).

Action continues Friday at 10 a.m. with the 400-yard individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 3 meter and 200 medley relay and 800 free relay finals. Fans can watch live on ESPN+ and follow on The American Championships Hub and on the Meet Mobile App.
