SMU men's tennis heads west for a rematch with Utah slated for Saturday at 5 p.m. CT from the Eccles Tennis Center.

SMU is fresh off a thrilling win 4-2 over No. 23 Oklahoma in Norman. After narrowly losing the doubles point, the Mustangs rallied back in singles picking up wins from a pair of Freshmen (Krall and Steinhausen) and senior Tomas Vaise. Chakravarthi clinched the match with a three-set victory over No. 69 Mason Beiler on the top line. It was the Mustangs first top-25 win since 2017.

The Mustangs defeated the Utes, 5-2, in their earlier matchup on Feb. 22 at the SMU Tennis Center. Julian Steinhausen/Liam Krall and Caleb Chakravarthi / Huntley Allen won doubles matches for the Mustangs on lines two and three. SMU took four singles wins to secure the victory against the PAC 12 opponent.Â

Coming off their first road win of the season, the Mustangs look to continue that success against the Utes. The matchup earlier this season was the first between Utah and SMU since 1996. The two teams were set to face off last season before the cancellation. The two programs have met in the NCAA Tournament twice, in 1982 and 1983. Both times the Mustangs took down the Utes in the round of 16 on their way to Final Four appearances.

-Julian Steinhausen leads the Mustangs with six dual match singles wins during the season.Â
- Caleb Chakravarthi has won his last three matches, all at line one including a win over No. 69 Beiler of Oklahoma.Â
-The Mustangs have won their last five matches at line one.
-Senior Captain Jan-Simon Vrbsky has two wins in his last three appearances, with three grueling matches. Vrsbky's gone to tiebreaker in three of the six full sets and played a pair of supertiebreakers, winning both.Â
-The Mustangs are 10-4 in third sets this season.
-SMU is 4-1 in supertiebreakers this season.Â
-At Line 4 and 5, the Mustangs are 7-3, with the only three defeats at each line coming during the road trip to take on Baylor and Texas.
DOUBLES UPDATE
Liam Krall and Julian Steinhausen have formed a tough doubles team early in their Mustang career. The pairing have a 3-2 record. Playing mostly line one, the pairing of Tomas Vaise and Juan Jose Bianchi have a 2-2 record and are undefeated across their last four matches. The duo have lost a pair of tiebreakers to ranked opponents during the season.

Utah have been dominant at home over the last three seasons, winning 16 of their last 17 home matches. The Utes are 4-2 on the 2021 season, including a perfect 3-0 at their home facility. Their only two loses came during their trip to Dallas, with the defeat against SMU and a loss to Wichita State. Last time out, Utah topped Idaho State with a pair of 5-2 scores in a doubleheader.
