DALLAS (SMU) – SMU men's tennis won its 12
th match of the season with a 4-1 victory over Lamar on Friday at the SMU Tennis Complex. The Mustangs snapped Lamar's seven-match winning stream and wrapped up the six-game homestand with a 5-1 record .
The Cardinals and Mustangs played a tight doubles point to begin the match with two courts going to a tiebreaker.
Caleb Chakravarthi and
Tomas Vaise avoided the breaker with a 6-4 win on court two.
Juan Jose Bianchi and
Tomas Vaise were forced to the breaker on the top line. The duo won their team-high seventh match of the season as they finished, 7-6 (5).
Huntley Allen and
Julian Steinhausen on court three were leading in a tiebreaker when the doubles point was clinches.
In singles, the Mustangs trotted out their recent top four along with
Jan-Simon Vrbsky and
Huntley Allen on lines five and six. SMU held strong with wins in five of six sets.
Julian Steinhausen won his team-high 11
th match of the season with a 6-3, 6-4 victory on court four. Senior captain Vrbsky made his return to the court for the first time in a month with a strong 6-3, 6-3 win on court five. SMU has posted a 14-5 record at line five this season.
The Cardinals broke onto the scoreboard with a win on court one. Chakravarthi fell 6-1, 7-5 to Axel Vila Antuna.
Vaise outlasted Carlos Paton Canal in a lengthy set one, 7-5, before taking the second, 6-4 to clinch the SMU dual victory.
Huntley Allen won his first set 6-3 followed by Lamar taking set two on court six. The match was in the third set at the time of clinch. Krall was looking to finish off his 6-4, 6-5 match on court two when Vaise ended play.
The Mustangs move to 12-7 on the season while the Cardinals fall to 7-2. The team travels to Tampa for a Sunday match with the 34
th-ranked South Florida Bulls. The match is set for 12:30 CT / 1:30 ET.
