No. 3 seed SMU faces No. 2 seed Boise State in the first round of the NIT at the Comerica Center on Thursday at 8 p.m. SMU is 5-3 away from Moody Coliseum this season. 

This is SMU's 18th postseason trip, and fourth in the past eight seasons. This is its fourth bid to the NIT with previous invites in 1986, 2000 and 2014. The Mustangs reached the championship game of the 2014 NIT.  SMU enters the tournament with an 11-5 record, including a 5-3 record away from Moody Coliseum. SMU was 7-4 in American Athletic Conference play, earning the No. 4 seed in the AAC Championship. 

NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE YEAR CANDIDATE: Kendric Davis was one of 35 players named to the 2020-21 Lute Olson Award Mid-Season Watch List that was announced on Jan. 25. The Lute Olson Award is presented annually to the nation's top Division I player and the recipient of this year's award will be announced in April. Davis is the third Mustang to make the Lute Olson Award Watch List, joining Nic Moore (2014-15) and Shake Milton (2017-18).

NABC/USBWA ALL-DISTRICT: Kendric Davis was named to the NABC All-District First Team and the USBWA All-District Team. This is the second straight NABC all-district selection for Davis after making the second team last season. 

ALL-AAC: Kendric Davis and Feron Hunt were named to the All-American Athletic Conference teams. Davis was a unanimous first-team selection and Hunt was honored on the third team. SMU has 17 All-AAC honors, the most among any program in the league's eight seasons. This is Davis' second selection after being named to The American's third team last season.

AAC LEADERS: SMU is in the top three in the AAC in scoring (74.1, 2nd), scoring margin (7.0, 3rd), FT% (72.9, 3rd), FG% (45.1, 1st), FG% defense (39.8, 3rd, 18th NCAA), blocked shots (4.5, 3rd, 37th NCAA) and assists (15.1, 3rd).

• Kendric Davis was named NABC All-Distric First Team and All-AAC First Team. He was the AAC Player of the Week on Dec. 7 and Feb. 15. He was also the ESPN National POTW on Dec. 7. He has 5 or more assists in 33 of 42 games as a Mustang (12 of 16 this season). He set the AAC record with 14 assists vs Cincinnati 1/7. • Ethan Chargois is averaging 9.1 points and has been in double figures in 7 games. He is also averaging 5.5 rebounds (11th AAC), 0.9 steals and 2.5 assists. He has 1020 career points, which is 40th at SMU.

• Feron Hunt (2021 All-AAC Third Team, AAC Weekly Honor Roll J18) is averaging 11.1 points (18th AAC), 7.9 rebounds (3rd AAC) and 0.9 blocks (9th AAC) while shooting 56.0% from the field (4th AAC). • Three Mustangs have double-doubles this season: Feron Hunt (5), Kendric Davis (4) and Ethan Chargois. 

• SMU started 6-0 this season after starting 8-0 last season, reaching at least 6-0 in back-to-back seasons for the second time in program history. The other was 1984-85 (9-0) and 1985-86 (6-0).

• SMU is 101-54 under Tim Jankovich and 69-17 at Moody Coliseum. The Mustangs are 6-2 at Moody this season and 21-4 in the past 25 games at Moody Coliseum.

• SMU is 51-12 in regular-season non-conference games under Tim Jankovich. The Mustangs are 41-4 at Moody Coliseum in those games, 3-4 in neutral-site games and 7-4 in true road games. 

• SMU received a vote in four straight AP Top 25 Polls beginning Dec. 7. The Mustangs also received votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll 5 straight weeks (Dec. 7 to Jan. 4). The Mustangs have been ranked or receiving votes in the AP Poll in seven of the past eight seasons (2013-14 to 2020-21). 

• SMU has 7 wins against AP Top 25 teams under Tim Jankovich (18 games). That is second at SMU. Doc Hayes had 13 from 1947-67.

•  SMU has won four total American Athletic Conference Championships, winning the regular season and tournament titles in 2015 and 2017.

•  SMU has had three players selected in the NBA Draft since 2017. Sterling Brown and Semi Ojeleye in 2017 and Shake Milton in 2018. Jahmal McMurray was selected in the 2019 NBA G-League Draft and is with the Texas Legends, the affiliate of the Dallas Mavericks. Ben Moore played for Indiana, San Antonio and in the G-League for Fort Wayne, the affiliate of the Indiana Pacers.

• The Mustangs have 17 All-American Athletic Conference honorees, the highest in the AAC, in the first eight seasons of the league. That includes five first-team selections.

LAST GAME (L, 74-71 vs Cincinnati on March 12): IRVING, Texas – Fifth-seeded Cincinnati pushed out to a big second-half lead and held on to defeat No. 4 seed SMU, 74-71, in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Air Force Reserve American Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Championship at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. The Bearcats opened the second half on a 16-3 run to jump out to a 20-point lead with 14:16 remaining at 46-26. The Mustangs used a late surge to get the game close, pulling within three with a tip-in at the buzzer. Jeremiah Davenport scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Cincinnati, while Mike Saunders Jr. added 12 points and six rebounds. Kendric Davis scored a career-high 35 points for SMU, which is also the tournament high so far. The unanimous All-American Athletic Conference First-Team selection was 9-of-16 from the field with four 3-pointers and 13-of-17 from the free throw line.

THE SERIES VS. BOISE STATE (6-5): This is the first time the teams have met since a home-and-home in 2016-17 and 2017-18. Each team won at home with Boise State winning 71-62 and SMU winning 86-63 in the second matchup. As Western Athletic Conference opponents, SMU posted a 5-4 edge over the Broncos. The only neutral-site matchup between the teams was in the 2003 WAC Tournament, where SMU won 65-58 in Las Vegas, Nev.

LAST MEETING VS BOISE STATE (W, 86-63 at SMU on Dec. 18, 2017): DALLAS -- Jimmy Whitt, Jahmal McMurray and Ethan Chargois scored 16 points apiece and SMU beat Boise State 86-63, ending the Broncos' six-game win streak. Ben Emelogu II added 12 points and Shake Milton scored 11 with seven rebounds and seven assists for SMU. Emelogu's 3 put SMU (9-3) up for good, 11-10, and the Mustangs led 33-22 at halftime after holding the Broncos to 29.6-percent shooting from the field. Jarrey Foster scored seven straight and Milton and McMurray each hit 3s for 50-27 lead with 14 minutes to go and the Broncos got no closer than 17 the rest of the way. SMU finished shooting 58.9 percent from the field to Boise State's 37.7 percent. Chandler Hutchison scored 18 points and Justinian Jessup added 11 for the Broncos (10-2), who were off to their best start since going 11-1 in 1987-88.

RETURN TO SENDER: Yor Anei has 23 blocks in his 10 games this season. He is averaging 2.27 blocks for his career, which is 11th among active student-athletes. He has had multiple blocks in 42 of 74 career games (6 of 10 this season). His 5 blocks at Temple tied the SMU record for blocks in an AAC game (Ben Moore 5 vs Cincinnati 1-7-2016).

HIGH-PERCENTAGE HUNT: Feron Hunt has shot 55.7% for his career (3rd at SMU). He is at 56.0% so far this season (4th AAC) after 55.4% as a freshman and 55.7% as a sophomore.

HUNTING FOR REBOUNDS: Feron Hunt is averaging 7.9 rebounds (3rd AAC) and has at least 7 rebounds in 12 of 16 games this season. He has 7 or more rebounds in 45 of 78 career games. He has led the team 30 times in his career (10x this season after 10 each previous year). In 2019-20, Feron Hunt posted 6.7 rebounds (8th AAC). Hunt shared the team lead in rebounding at 6.4 per game as a freshman. He was just the sixth Mustang to lead the team as a freshman.

BIG-SHOT BANDOUMEL: Emmanuel Bandoumel hit a driving jumper with 0.2 on the clock for the 66-64 win at [-/rv] Dayton on Dec. 5. It was his second game winner. He hit a three that beat the shot-clock buzzer with 30 seconds left in overtime for a 73-72 victory over [20/19] Houston on Feb. 15, 2020.

FIVE AND DIME: Kendric Davis is averaging 7.4 assists (1st AAC, 5th NCAA). He has 5 or more assists in 33 of 42 games at SMU (12 of 16 this season). He set the AAC record with 14 assists vs Cincinnati 1/7/21 and has notched 13 assists twice (vs Houston Baptist 12/2/20 & vs Tulane on 2/1/20). He had 5 or more assists in 14 straight games (11/27/19 to 1/25/20). That was the longest streak with at least 5 assists since the SMU-record of 16 by Butch Moore from 3/14/85 to 1/8/86. Davis' 6.7 assists led the AAC (10th NCAA) and had a league-best 2.7 assist-to-turnover ratio (19th NCAA).
13 Assists / 0 Turnovers: In the game vs HBU 12/2/20, he had 13 assists with 0 turnovers (in addition to 20 points and 6 steals). That was the 19th time since 2010 a Division I player had at least 13 assists with no turnovers. HEAD COACH TIM JANKOVICH... is in his fifth season at the helm at SMU after four seasons as the associate head coach. He is in his 38th season as a collegiate coach, and his 16th as a head coach. As a head coach, he is 258-175 (.596) [101-54 at SMU (.652), including 69-17 (.802) at Moody Coliseum (started 36-0, second best in NCAA history)]. That includes a 104-64 mark at ISU where his teams recorded four top-three finishes in the Missouri Valley, reached the conference tournament final three times and earned four NIT bids. As an assistant or head coach, his teams are 628-375 (.626) with six regular season conference championships, four league tournament titles, nine NCAA Tournament appearances and eight NIT bids. This is his 12th season as the leader of a Division I program, including five as head coach at Illinois State (2007-12) and four at North Texas (1993-97). The 2017-18 Mustangs started 13-6 with three wins over ranked opponents, topping No. 2 Arizona in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, No. 14 USC at Moody Coliseum and No. 7 Wichita State on the road. In 2016-17, SMU finished 30-5 and No. 11 in the AP poll after winning The American regular season and tournament titles en route to the NCAA Tournament. In 2015-16, he coached the Mustangs to a 9-0 start as SMU was eventually the last unbeaten team in the country at 18-0, and winning the Las Vegas Classic title during the season-opening streak. The Mustangs went 25-5, finishing the season ranked No. 24 after reaching a high of No. 8. In 2014-15, the Mustangs claimed the AAC regular season and tournament championships en route to the NCAA Tournament. SMU was the top seed in the 2014 NIT, reaching the title game.

JANKOVICH IN CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT AND POSTSEASON GAMES: His teams are 15-11 (.577) in conference tournament games with a 5-3 record in the American Athletic Conference Tournament. He has led his teams to one title (AAC 2017) and five trips to the championship game (Missouri Valley, 2008, '09, '12; Southland, 1994). Century Mark: The 65-63 win at Tulsa on Feb. 3, 2021 was the 100th victory for SMU under Head Coach Tim Jankovich. He reached the milestone in his 153rd game at the helm, the fastest in program history. (Previous best was 181 games.) TROPHY CASE: Since the start of the 2013-14 season, the Mustangs have added seven items to the trophy case. SMU won the 2014-15 and 2016-17 American Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles. SMU has also won 2019-20 Southwestern Showdown and the 2015-16 Las Vegas Classic. In 2013-14, SMU was the runner-up in the NIT.

AMERICAN/SEC ALLIANCE: The American entered into a scheduling alliance with the SEC prior to the 2019-20 season that featured four teams from each conference playing home-and-home series. SMU-Vanderbilt was scheduled for Dec. 8 at Moody Coliseum, but was canceled due to a COVID-19 case within the Vanderbilt program, and the ensuing pause in basketball activities. The second part of the home-and-home series will be moved to the 2021-22 season. SMU won 92-81 in overtime in Nashville on Jan. 4, 2020.
