SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – No. 18 SMU opens the NCAA Championships Friday at Grayhawk Golf Club, looking for the team's third appearance in the match-play quarterfinals since 2014.

The 30-team field will be cut to 15 teams and nine individuals after 54 holes of play for a final round of stroke play on Monday. After Monday's stroke play round, an individual national champion is crowned, and the top eight teams advance to match play.

SMU enters the event with the top golfer in the country, according to the Golfweek Rankings, Noah Goodwin. Goodwin, who won the NCAA Stillwater Regional, is -30 in his last three events, and does not have a round over-par in that span. Goodwin is the American Athletic Conference's Golfer of the Year, and earned recognition for the Haskins Award Final Watch List and as a Finalist for the Nicklaus Award.

Mac Meissner enters his last collegiate event with a 71.19 stroke average on the season, and the best finish at the NCAA Championship of any active Mustang, tying for 11th in 2019. Meissner has six top-15 finishes in seven events this season.

Ollie Osborne, who joined Goodwin and Meissner as the Mustangs' All-AAC selections this year, has two-top-15 finishes on the season, including a -1 performance at the American Athletic Conference Championship, which netted a solo-11th.

AAC Freshman of the Year Nathan Petronzio is set to make his NCAA Championships debut. Petronzio tied for eighth at the AAC Championship and then had a 67 in the second round at the NCAA Stillwater Regional, helping the Mustangs secure their place in Scottsdale.

Justin Thompson showed consistency at the Stillwater Regional, signing for a score between 73 and 75 each round to tie for 30th. Dawson Ovard is the Mustangs' substitute, having tied for 31st at the American Athletic Conference Championship.

The Mustangs have produced memorable moments in each of their last three trips to the finals site, reaching match play in 2014 and 2019, plus producing the individual national champion, Bryson DeChambeau, in 2015.

The Mustangs get underway at 8:10 a.m. CT Friday for the first of a potential four stroke play rounds. Monday's round of stroke play, plus the entirety of match play, is broadcast on Golf Channel. Â
