COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The Mustangs opened their 2022 season at Texas A&M's Ted Nelson Invitational with seven personal bests on Saturday. Coach A'Havahla Haynes said before the meet that it would be a success if every athlete seeks improvement in their event. With so many personal bests, this meet was just that for an opener – a success.
"We had a meet full of progress," Haynes said. "We either found or refined our process heading into competition. Everyone competed to the best of their ability, and this is our most successful season opener to date."
Freshman Maykayla Jackson started her collegiate career with a top-ten performance in SMU history in the long jump. She is now ninth for long jump for the Mustangs with a distance of 5.38 meters. She placed ninth among the field. Sophomores Raelyn Roberson and Funminiyi Olajide placed fifth and sixth in long jump.
"I felt like it was a good, solid start for the season," Roberson said. "I still have a lot to learn and put together for my jumps, so I'm feeling excited for the upcoming meets."
Roberson also competed in the 60m race where to achieved a PR with a time of 7.76.
"I also feel good about my PR in the 60," Roberson said. "It's always nice to see your training show up in competition."
Sophomore Mackenzie Montandon secured a PR in the 800 meter race with a time of 2:23.45 to place 13th. Five other Mustangs joined her in the race including Steffi Jones, who placed third; Leoni Mierswa, who placed ninth; and Maddie Hulcy who also had a PR with a time of 2:29.54.
Montandon said her preseason training was going well, and she was excited to see how it would pay off in the opener.
"I felt really good and strong going into the race," Montandon said. "Going in, I thought I would do better than last year's opener, but I definitely didn't think I would PR. I was a little shocked at my time, but it was also very exciting to open the season running better than I ever have."
Hulcy, who also had a PR in the mile with a placement of ninth at 5:10.61 in addition to the 800, said this meet was about training and setting the stage for the rest of the season as she competed in events that are not her usual races.
"The mile and 800 are not my usual events, but I was still happy to do my best and set myself up to see some strong results when I run my primary events, the 3k and 5k, in the coming weeks," Hulcy said. "I had a lot of fun having the whole team together today. It's a really good feeling of energy and support, and I'm looking forward to a great season with these amazing women."
In the mile, Jones placed fourth with a time of 5:02.88. She was followed by Kendall Saeger in seventh with a time of 5:07.76. Mia Olsen placed 10th, and Lior Kremer came right behind her in 11th at 5:13.22 for a PR.
Madison Savoy placed at ninth in the 400 for the Mustangs and posted a PR time of 58.62 for a great start to her season.
The Mustangs will be back in action next weekend on Jan. 21 at Texas Tech for the Red Raider Open.
