WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. (SMU) – The SMU men's golf team opens its spring 2022 season on the west coast against a stacked field comprised of a number of the nation's top collegiate amateur teams.
On Monday, the Mustangs are set to open competition in the Southwestern Invitational, presented by TopGolf and hosted by reigning national champion Pepperdine. The three-day event will be aired on the Golf Channel, with live scoring available via
Golfstat. All three days, Golf Channel will air College Central from 2-3:30 p.m. CT followed by live coverage of the Southwestern Invitational from 3:30-6:30 p.m. CT.
The Field
The 12-team field, including No. 38 SMU, is as follows: No. 2 Pepperdine, No. 3 Arizona State, No. 7 Texas, No. 10 Wake Forest, No. 16 Georgia, No. 20 Washington, No. 59 San Diego State, No. 68 UCLA, No. 79 San Jose State, No. 93 USC and No. 122 UNLV. Rankings courtesy of

 Both Wong and Butler will star in their first Southwestern Invitational for the Mustangs.
Goodwin, ranked No. 26 in the
World Amateur Golf Rankings and No. 42 in the
men's collegiate amateur rankings by Golfweek/Sagarin, enters the spring following  a career season for the 2021 GCAA All-American and AAC Golfer of the Year. Goodwin opens 2022 following medalist honors at the NCAA Stillwater Regional (May 17-18), becoming the third SMU golfer to earn medalist or co-medalist honors at an NCAA Regional. In the event, Goodwin shot -15, tying for the second-best 54-hole score (relative to par) in SMU history, and the best in NCAA play.
Osborne has averaged 73.39Â strokes over 75 rounds, currently good for the tenth-best in program history. Osborne's best finish of his sophomore season came in the spring Trinity Forest Invitational, where his -3 tally earned him a fourth place finish on the way to an SMU team title in the event. He played in the 2021 Master's Tournament, where he posted the lowest amateur score (78-78=156), but was unable to advance. Osborne also competed in the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines in 2021, which was highlighted by a second-round 72. The U.S. Open and Master's invites were from a runner-up finish in the 2020 U.S. Amateur.
Sophomore Petronzio debuted his 2021 AAC Freshman of the Year campaign at the Southwestern Invitational, where a 7-over 223 finish earned him a spot tied for 18
th on the week. Petronzio's best finish of the year came in the form of a -3 performance at the spring Trinity Forest Invitational, earning him a fourth-place finish.
Leading Into the Spring
SMU, currently ranked  38
th by Golfweek/Sagarin and
52nd nationally per Golfstat, completed a fall season which included its second consecutive title berth at the Mustangs' own Trinity Forest Invitational in the fall. Goodwin led the way for the Mustangs throughout, hitting a tournament-low 65 in the second round on the way to an individual title at -15 for the event, the second-lowest score of a champion in the event's history. Including Goodwin's medal finish, three Mustangs finished inside of the top 20 (Goodwin 1
st, Osborne/

th), while the team totaled nine rounds in the 60's throughout the event.
The Mustangs, whose 2021 season ended with a 17
th-place finish in the NCAA Championships, posted four top-three finishes as a team in eight events, including the win at the spring Trinity Forest Invitational. Goodwin, who finished the season setting the program's single season stroke average record (70.00), posted an individual victory at the NCAA Stillwater Regional. The Mustangs finished the year with a total of nine top-five individual finishes among four different players.
Last Time at the Southwestern Invitational
To open its 2021 season, SMU took a third-place finish at the Southwestern invitational off an 18-over 882 performance from the Mustangs. Goodwin with an even par performance, tying for fourth in the contest and was one of just six players in the field to finish 54 holes at par-or-better. Senior
Mac Meissner ended the tournament with a 1-over 217, good for a tie for seventh place.
