Day One Scores

Westlake Village, Calif. (SMU) – A four-under 68 showing from sophomore Nathan Petronzio highlighted SMU men's golf's efforts in the opening day of the Southwestern Invitational.

2021 American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year Petronzio posted a top-ten performance throughout the opening round, and was tied for first following a birdie on a par-five 12th hole. He finished the opening round with six total birdies, tied with senior Noah Goodwin for fourth most against the field. Petronzio completed the round tied for third.

Reigning AAC Golfer of the Year Goodwin followed up Petronzio on the score card, posting a +1 to finish the first round tied for 25th. Birdies on four of the back nine underscored a substantial effort by Goodwin on the back half of the day to return to par that was marred by a double bogey on the 14th hole.

Junior Ben Wong logged four birdies on the day and averaged par through the back nine, however was unable to rectify a +4 outing through the opening five holes. Wong ended the day with a six over-par 78.

Prescott Butler completed his debut at the Southwestern Invitational +3 on the day, posting two birdies on the fourth and sixth holes.

The No. 52 Mustangs, per Golfstat, part of a 12-team field comprised of six of the top-21 ranked teams in the nation, completed the day with a ninth-place finish, carding a 294. San Jose State edged SMU for eighth place by two strokes at 292.

SMU returns to the Lakes/Oaks courses of the North Ranch Country Club on Tuesday to open day two of the Southwestern Invitational.
