AUSTIN (SMU) – The SMU women's tennis team fell 4-0 to the No. 1-ranked Texas Longhorns on Saturday, snapping a three-match win streak for the Mustangs to end the ITA Kickoff Weekend.
SMU fell back early, following a Longhorns doubles-clinching victory on courts one and two.
Claudia Bartolome/
Jackie Nylander fell 6-3 to Longhorns opposition, shortly followed by a 6-2 loss for
Lexi Keberle/
Lana Mavor on flight two.
Nicole Petchey/
Hadley Doyle trailed 5-2 on the third doubles court before the doubles point was clinched.
Singles competition offered opportunities for a Mustangs rebuttal, however SMU was largely unable to capitalize.
Nylander, Mavor, and Doyle's matches ended in straight-set defeats, shutting off any avenue for a Mustang comeback and clinching the Longhorns' second shutout of the weekend.
Keberle, after falling 6-0 in the opening set on flight one to Longhorn Peyton Stearns, responded with a 4-0 run of her own to open the second, and closed out the set with a 6-2 win, forcing a deciding third set. Down 2-1, Keberle's efforts to avoid a team shutout were cut short, as junior
Hadley Doyle fell 6-1 in her second set, sealing the shutout.
On court six, Petchey's opening set against No. 117 Malaika Rapolu ended in a tightly-contested 7-5 win in favor of the Longhorns. Petchey led 1-0 in the second set before the match was called.
The Mustangs continue their non-conference road slate next Saturday with a noon match at Texas A&M.
