Four Mustangs To Compete At CSCAA Open Water Championship

DALLAS (SMU) – Four Mustangs will travel to Florida International University to compete at the CSCAA College National Open Water Championship. The event will be held Sunday in Biscayne Bay. Participation in the event is limited to current NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA member institutions.
Annabelle Corcoran, Frederica Kizek, Julianna Penner and Mya VanderHagen will represent SMU in the women's 5K race starting at 9 a.m. CT. The top five finishers in the event earn invites to the USA Swimming 5K Open Water Championships.
Distance standouts for the Mustangs, Kizek, Corcoran and Penner hold the top three spots in the 1,000-yard and 1,650-yard freestyles this season.

At the 2022 American Athletic Conference Championships, Kizek posted a career performance in the mile, winning the Mustangs' first American championship in the event. The junior posted an NCAA B cut at 16:27.69 and became the eighth fastest performer all-time at SMU in the event. She ranks sixth in the 1,000 free.
Corcoran was eight in the 1,650 free at the AAC Championships, scoring for the Mustangs.
Penner consistently represents Venezuela at International swimming events in distance races, as well as open water events.
A versatile swimmer for the Mustangs, VanderHagen came into SMU as a state medalist and school record holder in the 500 free. Â
