Mustangs Post Four Top-10 Performances in Opening Weekend

Dec 4

Air Force Results & BU Results

SMU had a successful opening weekend of the 2022-2023 indoor season with four Top-10 SMU performances.

On Friday at Air Force's Holiday Opener, Olivia Dobson tied the current sixth best performance in SMU history in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.14. She placed 10th among the field in Colorado Springs. SMU also filled the 11th and 12th place positions with Nea Sanders running 9.26 and Emily Waller running 9.28. Lucia Sanchez placed 15th with a time of 9.34.

Raelyn Roberson opened up her season with a time of 7.73 seconds in the 60-meter dash – a new personal best – and a fifth-place finish. K'Nyah Isaac was close behind running a time of 7.76 for a seventh-place finish.

Whitney Williams ran two PRs -- placing 13th in 60 with a time of 7.84 and first in the 300 running a time of 39.25.

"Although the race didn't go as planned, I am still proud of my performance, and it was a really good start to the season," Williams said. "I'm really excited for what is to come."

In the long jump, Funminiyi Olajide won the event with a jump of 5.99 meters. Hedda Kvalvag earned a spot on the SMU Top-10 list with a jump of 5.81 meters – good enough for fourth in the competition and sixth in SMU history.

At Boston University, Kaitlyn Gearin opened up her indoor season running a time of 9:30.46 in the 3,000 – bringing her to fourth on the SMU Top-10 list. Alanis Robineau-Fauvey ran a time of 9:42.50 and Lior Kremer completed the 3,000 meter race in 10:12.90. Gearin said they had a fun time racing at BU.

"All of us who raced were in good heats to push ourselves and compete, and we had a great day overall," Gearin said. "It feels good to have gotten a strong race in now and know that I can progress from this point when we come back in January."

Freshman Macey Hilton added her name to SMU history running the sixth fastest time by a Mustang in the 800. Her time of 2:10.49 placed her third among the competition. She also placed 15th in the mile with a time of 4:59.65.

Senior Maddie Hulcy ran her first race of the season in the 5,000 with a time of 16:57.72.

The Mustangs will be back in action after the holidays on January 20th at Vanderbilt University.
