Results: Texas Tech | Vanderbilt
The Mustangs end their regular indoor season with ten personal bests at two meets – Vanderbilt and Texas Tech. Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said she was happy about the results of the weekend.
"I'm really excited about the overall progress of every individual member of this team since January 15th," Haynes said. "This weekend was the result of consistent work and shared goals. We had four SMU top ten performances, a number of personal bests and season bests."
Steffi Jones posted an SMU Top-10 performance along with a PR running a time of 2:11.79 in the 800. She is now ranked sixth on the SMU list. She did again in the mile with a time of 4:53.12 for a PR and an SMU Top-10 placement of 10th. Leoni Mierswa also had a personal best in the mile with a time of 4:55.65. Both athletes are in the top-12 times for the conference.
The 3k contained a slew of personal bests for the Mustangs. Katilyn Gearin ran a time of 9:42.39 and placed third in the field, Mia Olsen ran 9:57.81, Maddie Hulcy ran 10:08.17, and Jessie Crowley had a time of 10:25.97.
"The distance group has been working really hard and had some great workout in the past month, and it was amazing to see it all pay off with so many PRs across the board," Hulcy said. "Vanderbilt was a really competitive and exciting environment, and everyone was there to compete. I'm really proud of my teammates for their focus and determination this weekend, and I'm hoping we can use these times to get good seed positions at conference."
Personal and season's bests also came out of Texas Tech for the sprinters and jumpers. Whitney Williams posted a personal best in the 400 with a time of 54.47.
"Although it was a small drop in time, I'm happy to see the progress I'm making," Williams said. "It's helping build my confidence for when conference comes."
Jada Laye posted her best times of the season in both the 60 with 7.70 and the 200 with 24.65.
"I'm getting back into it, but we're far from done," Laye said.
Funminiyi Olajide had a season's best mark in the long jump at 6.03 meters – moving her up to fourth in the conference. Maria Kavalierou posted a SMU Top-10 performance mark in the triple jump with a jump of 11.96 -- tying Maykayla Jackson's earlier jump this season for the seventh spot.
SMU's 4x400 is also the 10th fastest time in SMU history with 3:45.32. The relay was made up of K'Nyah Isaac, Chika Iwuamadi, Emily Waller and Williams.
Next up for the Mustangs is the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships on Feb. 25-26.
"I think this is group is as fit as we've ever been, and we're all committed to getting some points on the board for the team at conference," Hulcy said.
"We are focused and ready to compete at the AACs in two weeks," Haynes said.
