Mustangs At The Prestige
SMU looks to maintain its strong showing at The Prestige in its third appearance at the event. In both previous contests, the Mustangs left with sixth and fifth-place respective finishes in the 2020 and 2021 editions of the event.
Mustang Lineup
SMU's lineup will consist of seniors
Noah Goodwin and
Justin Thompson, juniors
Ollie Osborne and
Prescott Butler, and sophomore
Nathan Petronzio.
American Conference Freshman of the Year Petronzio completed his sophomore debut at the Southwestern Invitational with a two-over 74, bringing his final score to one-over 215, good for a 13th-place finish. An under-four first round propelled Petronzio through the week's competition, keeping him within striking distance of a medal finish. The junior's -10 performance at par-five holes tied for the best in the tournament, hitting par or better on all twelve par-five holes played. Petronzio's standout performance on par fives included an eagle on a second-round 15th.
Goodwin tallied two rounds in the 60's in SMU's 2020 appearance at The Prestige, leading the way in a top-ten finish. The current American Conference Golfer of the Year and first-team All-American enters the event following a three-over 219 final tally at the Southwestern Invitational in January, finishing tied for 27
th in the 64-player tournament. Goodwin finished the Mustangs' 2021 appearance at The Prestige tied for 21st at +3.
Osborne looks to reproduce previous success in the Mustangs' 2020 appearance at The Prestige, in which he carded a six-under at the event, good for a fourth-place finish and American Conference Golfer of the Week honors. Osborne led the tournament by averaging 2.75 strokes on Greg Norman's four par 3s, and led the team with 14 birdies.
Last Fall
SMU completed a fall season which included its second-consecutive title berth at the Mustangs' own Trinity Forest Invitational in the fall. Goodwin led the way for the Mustangs throughout, hitting a tournament-low 65 in the second round on the way to an individual title at -15 for the event, the second-lowest score of a champion in the event's history. Including Goodwin's medal finish, three Mustangs finished inside of the top 20 (Goodwin 1
st, Osborne/
Holden Wisener T-5
th), while the team totaled nine rounds in the 60's throughout the event.
The Mustangs, whose 2021 season ended with a 17
th-place finish in the NCAA Championships, posted four top-three finishes as a team in eight events, including the win at the spring Trinity Forest Invitational. Goodwin, who finished the season setting the program's single season stroke average record (70.00), posted an individual victory at the NCAA Stillwater Regional. The Mustangs finished the year with a total of nine top-five individual finishes among four different players.
