LA QUINTA, Calif. (SMU) – After a tough second round complicated by high winds, the SMU men's golf team had its best outing on day three of the Prestige on the way to a tied for ninth-place finish on the Greg Norman course at PGA West on Wednesday.
The Mustangs hit a three-over 295 through the final round of the event, resulting in a 43-over 895 final tally and ending the tournament tied with Iowa State.
Vanderbilt claimed the No. 1 spot atop the leaderboard, carding a plus-16 868 and finishing ten strokes ahead of second place Oregon. Texas Tech's Ludvig Aberg (71, 69, 70, -3 210) took the individual title for the second consecutive year.
Ollie Osborne logged two eagles through the first nine holes of the day, tying the second-best score of the field through the front nine of the third round. Osborne finished the final round with a two-under 69 and tied for 45
th in a field of 120 competitors. Osborne's two eagles for SMU tied the most for an individual, and was second only to San Francisco's three throughout the three-day event. The junior finished with the seventh-best individual performance on par fives (-3, 4.67 avg.).
Junior
Prescott Butler led scoring for SMU throughout the week, finishing with a team-high 12-over 220. Three consecutive birdies to open the final round had Butler placed as high as third on the day, before ending the round with a four-over 75 and ending the tournament tied for 12
th.
Noah Goodwin shot a plus-one 72, logging birdies on the eighth, tenth, and twelfth holes. The AAC Golfer of the Year finished the week with a 15-over 228, tying for 59
th against the field.
Sophomore
Nathan Petronzio logged five birdies and shot even-par through the front nine of the third round, but a triple on the 17
th hole left the AAC Freshman of the Year with a plus-three finish on the day. Petronzio completed the final round tied for 53
rd.
The Mustangs ended the tournament with the fourth-best performance on par fives totaling two-under with a stroke average of 4.96.
The Mustangs continue their spring campaign on Monday, as they travel to Las Vegas for the opening round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate on Sunday, Feb. 27, hosted by UNLV.
