SMU visits [14/15] Houston on Sunday. The Mustangs won the first matchup of the season 85-83 at Moody Coliseum on February 9. SMU is 20-6 overall and 11-3 in the American Athletic Conference, one game behind Houston, after a 75-61 win over Tulsa on Wednesday.

SMU is 17-3 in the last 20 games with a 6-3 record on the road in that stretch. The Mustangs are receiving votes in the AP Top 25 and USA Today Coaches Poll. SMU has eight wins over AP Top 20 teams under Head Coach Tim Jankovich.

In Wednesday's win over Tulsa, Marcus Weathers had 14 points and 13 rebounds for his AAC-leading sixth double-double. Kendric Davis added 17 points and seven assists while Emmanuel Bandoumel scored 14 points and Michael Weathers added 11 points. The Mustangs shot 49.1% for the game while holding Tulsa to just 36.4%. The Mustangs led 30-27 at halftime, but used a 19-1 run early in the second half to build a 22-point lead. 

Kendric Davis was named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll on February 21. It was his ninth honor of the season and 20th of his career. That is the most AAC Weekly Honors in a season for a Mustang, surpassing eight by Nic Moore in 2014-15, Semi Ojeleye in 2016-17 and Davis in 2020-21. He tied Nic Moore (2013-16) for the most AAC career weekly honors.

SMU is leading The American in threes made (8.9, 41st NCAA) and ranks second in the league for 3-point percentage (37.0%, 43rd NCAA). Three Mustangs are averaging at least 1.7 threes per game with Kendric Davis making 2.4 (7th AAC), Emmanuel Bandoumel at 2.2 (8th AAC) and Zach Nutall at 1.7. The Mustangs lead the AAC in defensive rebounds (28.6, 11th NCAA), rank third in scoring at 74.9 points, third in FG% (45.3%), third in FG% defense (39.7%, 23rd NCAA) and fourth in FT% (74.3%). 

Kendric Davis is leading the AAC in scoring (19.3, 35th NCAA). He is in the top five in the league in field-goal percentage (44.7%, 3rd AAC), free-throw percentage (86.3%, 2nd AAC, 53rd NCAA) and assists (4.7, 3rd AAC, 53rd NCAA). Davis is also ranked in the league for assist-to-turnover ratio (1.7, 9th AAC), 3FGs made (2.4, 7th AAC) and steals (1.5, 11th AAC). Marcus Weathers leads SMU in rebounding (7.3, 2nd AAC) and double-doubles (6, 1st AAC). Michael Weathers is ranked in the AAC in blocked shots (1.3, 7thAAC), steals (1.6, 8th AAC) and rebounds (5.6, 12th AAC). Emmanuel Bandoumel is averaging 10.6 points and Michael Weathers is averaging 10.0 to give the Mustangs four players averaging double figures in scoring.

Kendric Davis was selected to the Naismith Trophy Midseason Team (1 of 30). He was also selected unanimous preseason All-American Athletic Conference First Team, named to the Naismith Trophy Watch List, the Wooden Award Preseason 50 Watch List, the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Watch List and the Lute Olson Player of the Year Award Watch List. This season, he has been national player of the week (Jan. 3) and earned a total of nine AAC Weekly Honors (3x Player of the Week, 6x Weekly Honor Roll). Last season, he was unanimous All-AAC First Team as well as USBWA All-District and NABC All-District. Davis led the AAC in scoring (19.0) and assists (7.6, 4th NCAA) last season, and was the only player to lead his league in both. 

SMU is 14-0 at home this season, and has won 16 straight at Moody Coliseum (T-8th NCAA active streaks). The Mustangs have wins in 35 of the last 39 games at Moody Coliseum. SMU is 6-4 on the road this season, going 6-3 in the last nine away from Moody Coliseum.

• Franklin Agunanne has played in 17 games this season, totaling 23 points and 31 rebounds. He had season highs of 8 points and 7 rebounds in the win vs Memphis Feb. 20 after. He also had 4 points, 3 rebounds and an assist in the win at Memphis.

• Emmanuel Bandoumel is averaging 10.6 points while hitting 38.4% on 3FGs (58-151) and making 2.2 threes per game (8th AAC). He had a career-high six threes (and career-best 23 points) at ECU on Feb. 12. He has hit at least four threes seven times this season (SMU is 6-1). He was awarded a scholarship on Jan. 19 as Semi Ojeleye, 2017 AAC Player of the Year and current member of the Los Angeles Clippers, delivered a recorded message to the team after practice and announced the news. 

• Isiah Jasey started 15 of the first 16 games (missed game at Tulsa, and suffered a season-ending right Achilles injury vs USF 1/12). He averaged 1.1 blocked shots (8th AAC at the time of injury) and 2.9 rebounds. He had a career-high 4 blocked shots in the win versus Dayton 12/8. Last season, he started 15 of 17 games. He finished 6th in the AAC in blocked shots (1.0) while adding 3.6 points and 3.8 rebounds in 18.1 minutes per contest.

• Darius McBride has made eight appearances this season. 

• Zach Nutall (2020-21 Southland Conference Player of the Year at Sam Houston) is averaging 7.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists while hitting 33.9% on 3FG (43-127).

• Zhuric Phelps (2021-22 AAC Freshman of the Week [D13], 2020-21 Texas Mr. Basketball) is averaging 4.3 points, 2.1 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 0.8 steals. He had 17 points in the win vs USF (1/12) and 13 points in the win vs Dayton (12/1). His 5 steals in the win vs ULM on Nov. 28 were the most by an SMU freshman since Feb. 19, 2011 (Jeremiah Samarrippas had 6 vs Tulsa).

• Jalen Smith has started 8 of 23 games played. He is averaging 2.2 points, 1.0 rebounds and he is 12-32 on 3FGs.

• Stefan Todorovic (Nike Hoop Summit, Serbian U19 Team) is averaging 3.2 points and hitting 46.3% from three in his freshman season (19-41).

LAST GAME (W, 75-61 vs Tulsa on Feb. 23): DALLAS (AP) -- Marcus Weathers tallied 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead SMU to a 75-61 win over Tulsa on Wednesday night, the Mustangs' 16th consecutive home victory. Kendric Davis had 17 points and seven assists for SMU (20-6, 11-3 American Athletic Conference). Emmanuel Bandoumel added 14 points. Michael Weathers had 11 points and six rebounds. Jeriah Horne had 24 points for the Golden Hurricane (9-17, 3-12). The Mustangs improve to 2-0 against the Golden Hurricane for the season. SMU defeated Tulsa 74-69 on Dec. 29.

THE SERIES VS. HOUSTON (34-55) (32-55+): SMU won the first meeting this season 85-83 in Dallas on Feb. 9. UH won both matchups in 2020-21 after the programs split 2019-20 with each winning at home. In the AAC, SMU was undefeated in the regular-season matchups in 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2016-17, was swept by UH in 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2020-21, and the rivals split 2015-16 and 2019-20. The teams spent 21 years together in the Southwest Conference (1975-1996) and eight as C-USA opponents (2005-2013) before moving to The American. Houston held a 28-14 advantage in the SWC and a 12-3 margin in C-USA games. SMU leads 2-1 in NCAA Tournament play. The Ponies won NCAA Regional matchups in 1956 and 1965, but lost in 1967. The eighth-ranked Mustangs won 89-76 over 17th-ranked Houston in the 1956 NCAA Tournament. SMU eventually advanced to the 1956 Final Four. The two met in the last SWC Tournament at Reunion Arena in Dallas with SMU notching a 62-57 win over the Cougars in 1996. (+32-55 officially, wins in 2013-14 later vacated).

LAST GAME VS HOUSTON (W, 85-83 vs [6/7] Houston on Feb. 9): DALLAS (AP) -- Kendric Davis scored 22 points and Marcus Weathers added 20 as SMU rallied from a 15-point second half deficit to stun No. 6 Houston 85-83 on Wednesday night. Davis sank two free throws with 40.6 seconds remaining to break an 81-all tie. Michael Weathers hit the second of two free throws with 24.1 seconds left for a three-point lead. Houston had a chance to tie in the closing seconds when Kyler Edwards heaved the ball toward the basket from near midcourt with two seconds left and was fouled by Emmanuel Bandoumel. Edwards hit the first free throw but missed the second. Edwards banged his third shot off the front rim and Houston was called for a lane violation. Michael Weathers added 17 points, including 14 in the second half, for the Mustangs (17-7, 8-2 American Athletic Conference), who moved within a game of first-place Houston (20-3, 9-1). SMU is 12-0 at home this season. Edwards, Taze Moore and Josh Carlton scored 17 points each for the Cougars, whose 12-game winning streak ended. Houston entered play leading NCAA Division I in field goal defense, yielding opponents only 36% per game, and was third in scoring defense at 56.6 points allowed per game. SMU passed that scoring total with 11 minutes to play and shot 46.4%. The Mustangs made 12 of 23 3-pointers for 52%.

UP NEXT: The Mustangs play their final regular-season games at home, hosting Cincinnati on March 3 and Tulane on March 6. The AAC Championship is March 10-13 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth.

BIG-SHOT BANDOUMEL: Emmanuel Bandoumel is shooting a career-high 38.4% on threes. He had a career-high six threes at East Carolina (2/12) and has has made four in a game seven times this season (SMU 6-1). He hit a driving jumper with 0.2 on the clock for the 66-64 win at [-/rv] Dayton on Dec. 5, 2020. It was his second game winner. He previously hit a three that beat the shot-clock buzzer with 30 seconds left in overtime for a 73-72 victory over [20/19] Houston on Feb. 15, 2020. He also hit a three to beat the halftime horn in the 80-75 overtime loss to Missouri. 

CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARDS: Marcus Weathers is averaging 7.3rebounds (2nd AAC). His 958 total career rebounds rank 14th among active student-athletes in NCAA D-I. He also has 1652 career points, which is 71st among active NCAA D-I student-athletes.

HEAD COACH TIM JANKOVICH... is in his sixth season at the helm at SMU after four seasons as the associate head coach. He is in his 39th season as a collegiate coach, and his 17th as a head coach. As a head coach, he is 278-182 (.604) [121-61 at SMU (.665), including 83-17 (.830) at Moody Coliseum (started 36-0, second best in NCAA history)]. That includes a 104-64 mark at ISU where his teams recorded four top-three finishes in the Missouri Valley, reached the conference tournament final three times and earned four NIT bids. As an assistant or head coach, his teams are 628-375 (.626) with six regular season conference championships, four league tournament titles, nine NCAA Tournament appearances and nine NIT bids. This is his 12th season as the leader of a Division I program, including five as head coach at Illinois State (2007-12) and four at North Texas (1993-97). The 2017-18 Mustangs started 13-6 with three wins over ranked opponents, topping No. 2 Arizona in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, No. 14 USC at Moody Coliseum and No. 7 Wichita State on the road. In 2016-17, SMU finished 30-5 and No. 11 in the AP poll after winning The American regular season and tournament titles en route to the NCAA Tournament. In 2015-16, he coached the Mustangs to a 9-0 start as SMU was eventually the last unbeaten team in the country at 18-0, and winning the Las Vegas Classic title during the season-opening streak. The Mustangs went 25-5, finishing the season ranked No. 24 after reaching a high of No. 8. In 2014-15, the Mustangs claimed the AAC regular season and tournament championships en route to the NCAA Tournament. SMU was the top seed in the 2014 NIT, reaching the title game.

TROPHY CASE: Since the start of the 2013-14 season, the Mustangs have added seven items to the trophy case. SMU won the 2014-15 and 2016-17 American Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles. SMU has also won 2019-20 Southwestern Showdown and the 2015-16 Las Vegas Classic.
