SMU hosts No. 6/7 Houston on Wednesday at Moody Coliseum in a matchup of the top two teams in the American Athletic Conference standings. SMU is 16-5 overall and 7-2 in The American after a 72-57 loss at Wichita State on Saturday.  The Mustangs are 13-2 over the past 15 games.

SMU is 11-0 at home this season, and has won 13 straight at Moody Coliseum. That is tied for 12th for the longest active streak in NCAA Division I. It is also tied for sixth in program history. The Mustangs have seven wins against teams in the AP Top 20 under Head Coach Tim Jankovich. 

SMU is leading The American in 3-pointers made (8.7, 68th NCAA) and ranks second in the league for 3-point percentage (36.1%, 64th NCAA). Three Mustangs are averaging at least 1.7 threes per game with Kendric Davis making 2.4 (8th AAC), Emmanuel Bandoumel at 2.2 per outing (9th AAC) and Zach Nutall at 1.7. The Mustangs lead the AAC in defensive rebounds (28.5, 16th NCAA), rank third in scoring at 75.1 points, third in FG% (45.1%), fifth in FG% defense (39.7%) and third in FT% (74.6%). 

Kendric Davis is leading the AAC in scoring (19.5, 30th NCAA) and free-throw percentage (87.5%, 39th NCAA). He is in the top five in the league in field-goal percentage (44.8%, 3rd AAC), assists (4.7, 3rd AAC, 58th NCAA) and 3FGs made (2.4, 8th AAC). Davis is also ranked in the league for assist-to-turnover ratio (1.8, 7th AAC) and steals (1.4, 14th AAC). Marcus Weathers leads SMU in rebounding (7.0, 2nd AAC) and double-doubles (4, T-1st AAC). Michael Weathers is ranked in the AAC in blocked shots (1.2, 7th AAC), steals (1.5, 8th AAC) and rebounds (5.4, 14th AAC).

Kendric Davis was selected unanimous preseason All-American Athletic Conference First Team, named to the Naismith Trophy Watch List, the Wooden Award Preseason 50 Watch List, the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Watch List and the Lute Olson Player of the Year Award Watch List. This season, he has been national player of the week (Jan. 3) and earned a total of seven AAC Weekly Honors (3x Player of the Week, 4x Weekly Honor Roll). Last season, he was unanimous All-AAC First Team as well as USBWA All-District and NABC All-District. Davis led the AAC in scoring (19.0) and assists (7.6, 4th NCAA) last season, and was the only player to lead his league in both. 

The Mustangs are 11-0 at home this season, have won 13 straight home games (T-12th NCAA active streaks) and have wins in 32 of the last 36 games at Moody Coliseum. SMU is 5-3 on the road this season, going 5-2 in the last seven away from Moody Coliseum.

• Franklin Agunanne has played in 13 games this season, totaling 10 points and 19 rebounds. He had 4 points, 3 rebounds and an assist in 9 minutes in the win at Memphis.

• Emmanuel Bandoumel is averaging 10.5 points while hitting 37.1% on 3FGs (46-124) and making 2.2 threes per game (9th AAC). He has hit four threes five times this season (SMU is 4-1). Had a career-high 21 points in the win vs ULM on 11/28 and had his AAC-best 17 points in the win at Tulane 1/15. In 2020-21, he averaged 10.2 points (24th AAC), 2.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists while shooting 36.4% from three (14th AAC) and 73.3% on FTs. He was the only player in the country to lead his league in both. 

• Tyler Lundblade (2020-21 McDonald's All-American nominee) is redshirting this season. He was awarded a scholarship on Jan. 19 as Semi Ojeleye, 2017 AAC Player of the Year and current member of the Milwaukee Bucks, delivered a recorded message to the team after practice and announced the news. 

• Isiah Jasey started 15 of the first 16 games (missed game at Tulsa, and suffered a season-ending right Achilles injury vs USF 1/12). He averaged 1.1 blocked shots (8th AAC at the time of injury) and 2.9 rebounds. He had a career-high 4 blocked shots in the win versus Dayton 12/8. Last season, he started 15 of 17 games. He finished 6th in the AAC in blocked shots (1.0) while adding 3.6 points and 3.8 rebounds in 18.1 minutes per contest.

• Darius McBride has made five appearances this season. 

• Zach Nutall (2020-21 Southland Conference Player of the Year at Sam Houston) is averaging 7.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists while hitting 33.7% on 3FG.

• Zhuric Phelps (2021-22 AAC Freshman of the Week [D13], 2020-21 Texas Mr. Basketball) is averaging 4.3 points, 2.1 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 0.7 steals. He had 17 points in the win vs USF (1/12) and 13 points in the win vs Dayton (12/1). His 5 steals in the win vs ULM on Nov. 28 were the most by an SMU freshman since Feb. 19, 2011 (Jeremiah Samarrippas had 6 vs Tulsa).

• Jalen Smith has started 8 of 21 games. He is averaging 2.3 points, 1.1 rebounds and he is 12-31 on 3FGs.

• Stefan Todorovic (Nike Hoop Summit, Serbian U19 Team) is averaging 2.9 points and hitting 38.7% from three in his freshman season (12-31).

• Marcus Weathers (AAC Player of the Week [J31], 2-time All-A-10 at Duquesne) has 4 doubles-doubles (1st AAC). He is averaging 11.8 points (18th AAC), 7.0 rebounds (2nd AAC) and 0.8 blocks while hitting 55.6% on FGs and 75.3% on FTs (11th AAC). He is also 12-31 on threes. 

• Michael Weathers (2020-21 SWAC Newcomer of the Year at Texas Southern) is contributing 9.0 points, 5.4 rebounds (14th AAC), 1.5 steals (8th AAC) and 1.2 blocks (7th AAC) while hitting 75.3% on free throws (11th AAC).

• Jahmar Young Jr. is adding 2.5 points, 1.8 rebounds and 0.7 blocks.

• SMU is 117-60 under Tim Jankovich and 80-17 at Moody Coliseum. The Mustangs are 32-4 at Moody Coliseum since the start of 2019-20.

• SMU is 60-15 in regular-season non-conference games under Tim Jankovich. The Mustangs are 49-4 at Moody Coliseum in those games, 3-6 in neutral-site games and 8-5 in true road games.

•  SMU has had three players selected in the NBA Draft since 2017. Sterling Brown and Semi Ojeleye in 2017 and Shake Milton in 2018. Jahmal McMurray was selected in the 2019 NBA G-League Draft. Ben Moore played for Indiana, San Antonio and in the G-League for Fort Wayne, the affiliate of the Indiana Pacers. Feron Hunt is with the Texas Legends, the G-League affiliate for the Mavericks. Hunt spent the 2021-22 preseason with the Dallas Mavericks and signed a 10-day contract with New Orleans (12/28).

LAST GAME (L, 72-57 at Wichita State on Feb. 5): WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Ricky Council IV and Tyson Etienne scored 20 points apiece as Wichita State rolled past SMU 72-57 on Saturday. Council came off the bench to make 6 of 9 shots and all seven of his free throws for the Shockers (12-8, 3-5 American Athletic Conference). Etienne sank 4 of 10 from 3-point range. Marcus Weathers had 14 points for the Mustangs (16-5, 7-2), who scored a season-low 23 points in the first half and trailed by 16. Emmanuel Bandoumel added 12 points as SMU saw a five-game win streak end.

THE SERIES VS. HOUSTON (33-55) (31-55+): UH won both matchups last season after the programs split 2019-20 with each winning at home. In the past eight AAC seasons, SMU was undefeated in the regular-season matchups in 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2016-17, was swept by UH in 2017-18, 2018-19 and 2020-21, and the rivals split 2015-16 and 2019-20. The teams spent 21 years together in the Southwest Conference (1975-1996) and eight as C-USA opponents (2005-2013) before moving to The American. Houston held a 28-14 advantage in the SWC and a 12-3 margin in C-USA games. SMU leads 2-1 in NCAA Tournament play. The Ponies won NCAA Regional matchups in 1956 and  1965, but lost in 1967. The eighth-ranked Mustangs won 89-76 over 17th-ranked Houston in the 1956 NCAA Tournament. SMU eventually advanced to the 1956 Final Four. The two met in the last SWC Tournament at Reunion Arena in Dallas with SMU notching a 62-57 win over the Cougars in 1996. (+31-55 officially, wins in 2013-14 later vacated).

LAST SEASON VS HOUSTON (L, 70-48 on January 31, 2021): HOUSTON (AP) — Marcus Sasser scored 19 points and No. 6 Houston beat SMU 70-48. Sasser bounced back to make five of his last 10 shots. After scoring just three points in a victory over Tulane on Thursday, he opened 0 for 5 against the Mustangs. Justin Gorham had nine points and 17 rebounds for Houston (15-1, 10-1 American), which won its 20th consecutive home game. Reggie Chaney added 10 points. The Cougars won despite shooting only 34%. Kendric Davis led SMU (9-4, 5-4) with 11 points. Feron Hunt and Yor Anei each scored 10 points for the Mustangs, who made 32% percent of their shots. (L, 74-60 on January 3, 2021): DALLAS (AP) -- Quentin Grimes hit a go-ahead 3-pointer to ignite a 10-0 run to start the second half for No. 5 Houston and the Cougars rebounded from their first loss with a 74-60 victory over previously undefeated SMU. That 3-pointer by Grimes from the top of the key to put Houston (8-1, 3-1 American) ahead to stay on the first shot after halftime and Justin Gorham then made a 3. Grimes also had a layup and two free throws in that game-turning run in just over 2 1/2 minutes. 

UP NEXT: The Mustangs play two straight on the road, at ECU Saturday and Temple on Feb. 16. The next home game is Feb. 20 vs Memphis.

BIG-SHOT BANDOUMEL: Emmanuel Bandoumel is shooting a career-high 37.1% on threes. Has has made four in a game five times this season (SMU 4-1). He hit a driving jumper with 0.2 on the clock for the 66-64 win at [-/rv] Dayton on Dec. 5, 2020. It was his second game winner. He previously hit a three that beat the shot-clock buzzer with 30 seconds left in overtime for a 73-72 victory over [20/19] Houston on Feb. 15, 2020. He also hit a three to beat the halftime horn in the 80-75 overtime loss to Missouri. 

FIVE AND DIME: Kendric Davis is averaging 19.5 points (1st AAC, 30th NCAA) and 4.7 assists (3rd AAC, 58th NCAA) with a 1.8 assist-to-turnover ratio (7th AAC). Last season, he averaged 7.6 assists (1st AAC, 4th NCAA). He has 5 or more assists in 46 of 64 games at SMU (12 of 21 this season). He set the AAC record with 14 assists vs Cincinnati 1/7/21 and has notched 13 assists twice (vs Houston Baptist 12/2/20 & vs Tulane on 2/1/20). He had 5 or more assists in 14 straight games (11/27/19 to 1/25/20). That was the longest streak with at least 5 assists since the SMU-record of 16 by Butch Moore from 3/14/85 to 1/8/86. Davis' 6.7 assists led the AAC (10th NCAA) and had a league-best 2.7 assist-to-turnover ratio (19th NCAA).

HEAD COACH TIM JANKOVICH... is in his sixth season at the helm at SMU after four seasons as the associate head coach. He is in his 39th season as a collegiate coach, and his 17th as a head coach. As a head coach, he is 274-181 (.602) [117-60 at SMU (.661), including 80-17 (.825) at Moody Coliseum (started 36-0, second best in NCAA history)]. That includes a 104-64 mark at ISU where his teams recorded four top-three finishes in the Missouri Valley, reached the conference tournament final three times and earned four NIT bids. As an assistant or head coach, his teams are 628-375 (.626) with six regular season conference championships, four league tournament titles, nine NCAA Tournament appearances and nine NIT bids. This is his 12th season as the leader of a Division I program, including five as head coach at Illinois State (2007-12) and four at North Texas (1993-97). The 2017-18 Mustangs started 13-6 with three wins over ranked opponents, topping No. 2 Arizona in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament, No. 14 USC at Moody Coliseum and No. 7 Wichita State on the road. In 2016-17, SMU finished 30-5 and No. 11 in the AP poll after winning The American regular season and tournament titles en route to the NCAA Tournament. In 2015-16, he coached the Mustangs to a 9-0 start as SMU was eventually the last unbeaten team in the country at 18-0, and winning the Las Vegas Classic title during the season-opening streak. The Mustangs went 25-5, finishing the season ranked No. 24 after reaching a high of No. 8. TROPHY CASE: Since the start of the 2013-14 season, the Mustangs have added seven items to the trophy case. SMU won the 2014-15 and 2016-17 American Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles. SMU has also won 2019-20 Southwestern Showdown and the 2015-16 Las Vegas Classic. DAVID B. MILLER COURT: On Dec. 5, 2018, SMU named the Moody Coliseum court after David B. Miller, alumnus and vice-chair of the Board of Trustees. A two-time SMU graduate, Miller earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration from Edwin L. Cox School of Business. As an undergraduate, he was a three-year starter and letterman on the varsity basketball team and a member of the 1971-72 Southwest Conference Co-Championship team. Since 2011, Mr. Miller and his wife, Carolyn Lacy Miller, have given $20 million toward the expansion and renovation of Moody Coliseum as well as the construction of the Miller Event Center. He has served on the SMU Board of Trustees since 2008 and also serves as chairman of the Cox Executive Board. He is a recipient of Distinguished Alumni Awards from both the University and the Cox School. In 2009, Miller was honored with the Silver Anniversary Mustang Award by the SMU Lettermen's Association. He is also a recipient of the Methodist Health System Foundation's 2017 Folsom Leadership Award. Miller is a co-founder and partner of EnCap Investments L.P., a private equity firm based in Houston and Dallas. He also is the president of the David B. Miller Family Foundation, which he established in 2006. In addition to donating to academic and athletic programs at SMU, the Miller Family Foundation contributes to numerous charitable organizations. Carolyn Miller is vice president of the foundation. The Millers have been generous long-time donors to SMU. Their gifts have created the David B. Miller Endowed Professorship in Cox School of Business, the SMU-in-Taos Campus Center, the Don Jackson Center for Financial Studies in Cox and the EnCap Investments & LCM Group Alternative Asset Management Center, also in Cox, as well as numerous general university and school-specific scholarship funds. They also have provided support for the Crum Basketball Center, the men's basketball program and Circle of Champions in the Department of Athletics. Before establishing EnCap, Mr. Miller served as co-CEO of MAZE Exploration Inc., a Denver-based oil and gas company that he co-founded in 1981. Mr. Miller began his professional career with Republic National Bank of Dallas, ultimately serving as vice president and manager of the bank's wholly-owned subsidiary, Republic Energy Finance Corporation.
