SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- The distance athletes competed in three races at San Francisco State's Mike Fanelli Track Classic on Thursday and Friday bettering their times as outdoor season continues.
"It was a successful trip West," Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said. "We had season bests and PBs across the entire group. The women had goals, engaged in the races, and executed their race plans."
Three Mustangs debuted the 3000 Steeplechase for SMU this season. Freshman Nikoleta Rafailaki placed second in the field with a time of 11:00.27. Jessie Crowley ran 11:28.73 and Cayla Eckenroth ran 11:49.88.
"Jessie Crowley took on her first steeplechase, which is always a feat," Haynes said.
The 1500 brought time drops from the previous meet at TCU. Steffi Jones placed fourth running three seconds better than the previous meet with a time of 4:32.06. Leoni Mierswa also bettered her time this season with 4:35.65 for 10th place.
Five Mustangs took to the track for this 5000 meter race and took over the conference rankings. Kaitlyn Gearin ran a time of 16:45.80 -- the fastest yet this season by an American Athletic Conference athlete. Mia Olsen is now second in the conference with 17:08.23. Saeger is fourth in the AAC with 17:14.97. Maddie Hulcy isn't far behind moving into fifth with 17:17.62. Lior Kremer is also in the top-10 for the conference.
"Maddie Hulcy had a significant 5k PB, which is well deserved," Haynes said. "Kendall Saeger also ran a gutsy first ever 5k."
The Mustangs will return to California for the Azusa Pacific and Mt. Sac meets April 13 through April 16.
