SMU wrapped up their three days of competition on the West Coast yesterday at Azusa Pacific. The team had a successful week of personal bests and great races putting them in position for a great championship season.
"The trip was successful," Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said. "The team put big performances. The biggest performance came from Olivia Dobson in the Heptathlon. She absolutely went for it and rose to the level of competition this weekend!"
Dobson scored 5486 points throughout the competition placing her eighth among a field of tough competitors. This is the second most scored by an American Athletic Conference athlete yet this season. She excelled in the field of events of the Heptathlon winning the Shot Put with a throw of 14.35 meters, placing sixth in the high jump with 1.70 meters, and placing seventh in the Javelin.
The jumpers held their ground in California. Maykayla Jackson and Maria Kavalierou placed 12th and 14th in a field of 50 athletes. Raelyn Roberson and Funminiyi Olajide placed third and fifth out of 65 athletes. This puts Roberson second in the conference with her season best jump of 6.15 meters. Olajide also moved up into the top marks in the conference.
"Raelyn Roberson had one of her best series of jumps all year," Haynes said.
The 10k brought personal bests for each Mustang in the race.
"The 10k women – Maddie Hulcy, Mia Olsen, Lior Kremer and Olivia Lackner – all put out big performances and personal bests."
Steffi Jones dropped nearly nine seconds off of her 1500 time from the previous meet running 4:23.44, and Mackenzie Montandon achieved her personal best time in the 800 with a time of 2:17.16.
"Mackenzie Montandon and Steffi Jones executed nearly perfect races in the mid-distances," Haynes said. "I am so pumped for this program as we near our championship portion of the season!"
Only one month remains until the AAC Championship at Wichita State, and the Mustangs in great position heading into championship season.
