TULSA, Okla. (SMU) – The second-seed SMU women's tennis team downed Cincinnati in a 4-0 shutout on Thursday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, advancing the Mustangs to an AAC Tournament Semifinal rematch with third-seeded Tulsa.
The match was won as a result of a doubles victory, followed by straight-set wins in singles for
Lexi Keberle,
Jackie Nylander, and
Nicole Petchey.
Keberle/Mavor defeated Ioana Guna/Emma Miceli 6-2 on court two to give the Mustangs a one-set advantage in doubles play, while logging their sixth-consecutive win.
With doubles wins split on courts one and two, it fell to Bartolome/Petchey to earn the point for SMU. Up 5-4 with a chance to clinch, the duo fell behind 30-love, then traded points to 40-15. Bartolome/Petchey then took back-to-back games, forcing a deuce point, where a double fault on the part of Cincinnati resulted in an SMU victory and 1-0 lead heading into singles. Bartolome/Petchey are 2-0 as a doubles pairing this season.
On line one in singles, Keberle defeated Elizabeth Pendergast, 6-1, 6-2, pushing SMU's lead to 2-0 and notching her 13
th win of the dual season.
Nylander, on court three, battled Cassie McClay to a 6-4 victory in the first set. After taking a 5-2 lead, McClay claimed back-to-back game wins to bring the affair to 5-4, before Nylander closed the door on a comeback to take the set at 6-4. In the second with a 4-2 lead, the junior took the final two games, securing SMU's third point, and her fourth-consecutive win.
Petchey's 6-2, 6-1 win over Kelli Niehaus marked her fifth clinching point of the season and third-consecutive in matches that have been completed. The win represents Petchey's third-straight, and eleventh of the dual season.
Two-seed SMU is set to face No. 3 Tulsa on Friday at 3 p.m. in a semifinal rematch after defeating the Golden Hurricane 5-2 on their home court on March 12. In the match, Tulsa claimed doubles, then was bested by the Mustangs in singles play. Keberle defeated Laia Conde Montfort 6-4, 6-1. Nylander took Maria Berlanga in three sets, falling 7-6 in the first, then claiming the second and third 6-2 6-1, respectively. Junior
Hadley Doyle defeated Shura Poppe, 6-0, 6-1 on court two. Mavor defeated Tulsa's Lily Hutchings on line five, 6-3 6-3. On court six, Petchey bested Tulsa's Lian Benedejcic, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
