OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — SMU rowing returns to Oak Ridge, Tenn., to defend its American Athletic Conference Championship title on Sunday at 8 a.m. CT.
The Mustangs will compete against University of Central Florida, Old Dominion University, Sacramento State University, Temple University and University of Tulsa, racing in the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and second varsity four. SMU enters the weekend as the No. 1 seed in each event, seeking a consecutive automatic bid to the NCAA Championship regatta.
The Mustangs are competing against conference opponents directly for the first time this season. SMU enters the championship nationally ranked a season-best No. 12 in the latest Pocock/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association poll while UCF is receiving votes.
At the 2021 AAC Championship, the Mustangs swept all four events, securing the program's first team conference title and first bid to the NCAA Championships. SMU earned eight all-conference selections and was named Coaching Staff of the Year for the second time. At NCAAs, SMU collected the highest ever finishes for an American team in the second varsity eight (eighth) and first varsity eight (13th). The Mustangs finished 11th overall out of 22 teams, another conference best.
