SARASOTA, Fla. – No. 12 SMU rowing returns for the second straight year to Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla. for the 2022 NCAA Rowing Championships this weekend.
The Mustangs enter as the No. 12 seed in the first varsity eight, No. 9 in the second varsity eight and No. 13 in the varsity four, out of 22 competing programs. The nine-seed for the second eight matches the all-time best ranking in any event for an American Athletic Conference team, set by SMU in the 2V8+ in 2021.
Racing begins Friday with heats at 8:36 a.m. CT for the first varsity eight, 8:48 a.m. CT for the second varsity eight and the varsity four at 10:12 a.m. CT.
The top two finishers in each heat on Friday will advance directly to the A-B semifinals on Saturday while the rest will race in repêchages on Friday afternoon. The top two finishers in each repêchage will advance to the A-B semifinals while the remaining crews will race in the C-D semifinals, all held on Saturday morning.
The top three crews from semifinals A-B advance to the grand final while the remainder will race in the petite final. The top three crews from semifinals C-D will advance to the C final with the remainder advancing to the D final.
All races will be live streamed on NCAA.com and live results will be available on RegattaTiming. An NCAA Rowing Championships app is available on both iPhone and Android and will provide live results, progressions and lane assignments for each day.
At the Mustangs' first appearance at the NCAA Championships in 2021, they finished 11th in the team standings out of 22 programs - the highest for any AAC team in history. The first varsity eight finished 13th overall, the highest finish in the event for any conference team, while the second varsity eight finished eighth, the best finish for any AAC boat in history.
