Conference Release
DALLAS (SMU) – The American Athletic Conference named SMU men's golf's
Noah Goodwin and
Nathan Petronzio to its 2022 All-Conference Team, along with naming Mustang head coach
Chris Parra AAC Coach of the Year, the league announced on Tuesday.
Goodwin claims his third consecutive all-conference selection after completing his senior campaign with four top-10 individual finishes which included his third career win at the Trinity Forest Invitational on Oct. 5. Goodwin's season scoring average (70.53) is good for the fourth-lowest single-season figure in program history, just beating his 2019-20 average (70.60), and falling in just behind Bryson Dechambeau's 70.46, set in 2013-14. Goodwin owns the program single-season scoring record, averaging 70.00 strokes per-round in the 2020-21 season.
Petronzio, named an all-conference selection for the first time in his Mustang career, comes fresh off his first individual collegiate tournament win at the AAC Championship on Apr. 24 and helping set a new 54-hole tournament record at the Southern Hills Golf Club. A 13-under, 203 finish for Petronzio tied the fifth-lowest 54-hole tournament score in program history, a mark set by Will Dodson in the 2006 C-USA Men's Championship and tied by Frank Wrenn at the John Burns Intercollegiate in 2007. Petronzio notched three other top-25 finishes throughout the spring season (T-13, Southwestern Invitational, T-21, Southern Highlands Collegiate, T-25, The Goodwin), and currently possesses the 15
th-lowest season scoring average in SMU history (72.10).
Parra, into his third season as the Jerry Pittman Head Men's Golf Coach and eighth as a member of the coaching staff at SMU, won the first AAC title of his head coaching tenure and the program's second since the 2013-14 season in which Bryson Dechambeau won the individual title. Under Parra, the Mustangs notched seven top-ten individual finishes this season, including medalist honors for Goodwin and Petronzio, and a team win at the AAC Championship.
The 2022 NCAA Men's Golf Selection Show will air on the Golf Channel at 3 p.m. CT on Wednesday, May 4. The championship will be played at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, from May 27 to June 1.
