IRVING, Texas (AAC/SMU) – SMU men's soccer junior forward Jose Ortiz was named the American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, along with freshman forward Elton Hedstrom earning Rookie of the Week recognition, the league announced Monday.

The Mustangs opened the season with a 1-1-0 mark, defeating Oral Roberts 4-0 on Aug. 25, followed by a 3-1 setback at Stanford Sunday.

Jose Ortiz hat trick propelled the Mustangs to a 4-0 season-opening victory Thursday night. Ortiz led the way for SMU from the start, scoring in the first 22 seconds of play.

Shortly after, in the 10th minute, Ortiz scored off a diving header assisted by Alexander Petraeus and Henry Howell. Ortiz completed the hat trick in the 64th minute after cashing in on a penalty kick.

Just before the halftime break against Oral Roberts, Elton Hedstrom capitalized on his first collegiate goal. The freshman from Umeaa, Sweden, headed one in the left side of the net to extend SMU's lead.

SMU is back in action on Friday, Sep. 2, as they take on Central Arkansas at the Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium in Dallas at 7 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
