Mustangs Take Second At Cactus Classic

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz (SMU) – SMU women's golf placed second in the Cactus Classic on Sunday at the Westin Kierland Golf Course.
 
The one-day event was decided by a points system with one point awarded for winning the hole and a half a point for a tie. The four teams, SMU, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Tulsa, would face each other in a round-robin format resulting in 27 total holes per player.
 
SMU started the day paired alongside Texas A&M.  The Mustangs narrowly won the matchup 23-22 led by 6.5 points from Lauren Miller. SMU trailed Tulsa by 3.5 points for the overall lead after round one.
 
In the middle matchup with Tulsa, SMU prevailed 24-21 narrowing the overall gap with the Golden Hurricane to just half a point (47.5-47) heading into the final matchup of the day. Miller was strong again in round two with six points contributed. Both Ashley Chow and Yunxuan (Michelle) Zhang chipped in 5.5 points in the middle round.
 
SMU scored 21.5 points in the final nine holes against Texas Tech. A&M jumped Tulsa and SMU to win the tournament with a total of 72 points. The Mustangs finished in second place just 3.5 points behind the winners.
 
Next up for the Mustangs, the team travels to Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. for the Therese Hession Regional Challenge running Feb. 12-14.
