The Mustangs walked away from the competition in Nashville this weekend with new personal best times, better conference standings, and a clear vision for moving forward for others. Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said the Vanderbilt Invitational was a great starting point.
"The team did multiple things well; put down conference scoring marks; put up personal bests and had a team first attitude," Haynes said.
Freshman Lucia Sanchez competed in her first Pentathlon for the Mustangs – scoring eighth overall. She placed third in the 800 with a time of 2:27.21 and improved her 60m hurdle time and long jump distance from the previous meet. She is currently ranked fifth in the conference.
SMU had five Mustangs in the long jump, including Funminiyi Olajide who placed fourth with a jump of 6.09 meters and Raelyn Roberson in ninth with a jump of 5.88 meters. Olajide sits in second in the AAC rankings with Roberson in fifth, and Hedda Kvalvag in seventh.
"It wasn't where I wanted to be, but I know what to work on for the next meet and I'm looking forward to getting to compete again," Roberson said.
Olivia Dobson sits in the top-20 within the conference in the high jump with her second-place finish and mark of 1.62 meters at Vanderbilt. She also sits at sixth in the AAC with her shot put throw of 14.24 meters.
K'Nyah Isaac achieved a personal best in the 60-meter race with a time of 7.76 seconds, and Macey Hilton has a new PR in the 800 after her time of 2:09.57 -- second in the conference. Maddie Hulcy moved up into eighth in the conference with her new personal best time of 9:49.00 in the 3000, which she led the Mustangs in this weekend.
"It was great to get to travel with the whole team this weekend, and I think we all benefited from a positive energy all around," Hulcy said. "This meet was about starting the season off right, seeing where we are as a team, and setting the next steps for practice. Overall, I hit my goals for the weekend and I'm looking forward to a great season!"
The Mustangs had success in the relays at Vanderbilt with an A and a B team in both the Distance Medley and the 4x400. In the Distance Medley, the relay made up on Leoni Mierswa, Williams, Hilton, and Alanis Robineau placed third with a time of 11:51.69. SMU also claimed third in the 4x400 with a time of 3:50.24. That relay was made up of Camryn McPhaul, Isaac, Hilton and Williams.
"I think it was a good meet for the whole team," Williams said. "This meet helped us to see what is going well and what we need to work on. Overall, the meet went well."
The Mustangs will be back in action next weekend at Texas Tech.
