Jack SMU Classic Day Two

Jack Hoagland Earns Another Top Five Program Record in Final Day of SMU Classic

Oct 7

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU men's swimming and diving team wrapped up the SMU Classic with the second day of competition at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium.

Jack Hoagland set another top five program record and B-Cut qualifying time — this time in the 500 free, with teammate Angus Corbeau placing first in the 200 IM with a time of 1:47.82 Hoagland moved to fourth place all-time in the 500 free on Friday.

Placing fourth in the 500 free, Hoagland's time of 4:19.60 earned him fourth place on SMU's all-time leaderboard for that particular race, also meeting the B-Cut standard of 4:21.99

"It was a really great experience," Hoagland said. "I think it was really a learning experience for me seeing where I'm at in the season, what I need to correct and fix to be able to move forward. Those times are close to in-season bests throughout my entire collegiate career. So to start off like that, to me is a really good signal of where the training is and how this team and staff have prepared me for the upcoming year.

Corbeau's time of 1:47.82 earned him first place in the B-Final of the 200 IM, only slightly over one second short of the B-Cut qualifying time.

The 200 medley relay was the men's first event of the day, with SMU touching the wall with a time of 1:27.12 in fifth place. The Mustangs were represented in this race by Jack Easton, Corbeau, Russell Exum and Lance Butler.

Sophomore Sage Sungail gathered a time of 4:28.97 in the 500 free, coming in behind Hoagland in the same race.

As for the platform end of the pool and in diving action, John Dymond finished sixth on 3 meter with a score of 279.85

"John did great," head diving coach Darian Schmidt said. "He's raw. He's learned a bunch. We threw in some new dives that he's never done until a few weeks ago. And he handled those really well. He's just a very coachable kid and he's going to continue to get better and better."

The event welcomed top competition from around the country — Auburn, Louisville, Missouri, USC, Texas — and featured eight swimmers and one diver from each competing institution. Each swimmer may compete in three events per day with one required to be a relay, and events will be contested in two heats, with one swimmer from each school in each heat. Divers will compete on 1 and 3 meter.

As a team, the Mustangs finished sixth place with 227 points.

"I think that there's no doubt that the team is going to prepare us all to have a fantastic year," Hoagland said. "And I think it's going to be not only a record breaking year for myself within this team as well in terms of top place finishes, but as well as best times for everybody within the team."
