Mustangs Record Over Three New All-Time Top 10 Performances In Final Day Of SMU Invite

DALLAS (SMU) — In the final day of the SMU Invite, Jack Forrest, Mark Van Eybergen, Chris Mykkanen and Sage Sungail all set new all-time top 10 performances in either the 100 or 1650 free.

Over the course of three days, SMU welcomed Yale, Hawaii, Rice, Drury and BYU to the Robson and Lindley Aquatics Center. The Mustangs concluded the meet over 350 points ahead of all other opponents, finishing first with a total 1,160. 

On Wednesday — the timed trials portion of competition — Forrest qualified for the Olympic Trials in the 400 free with a time of 3:55.57.

Going back to Saturday's action, in the long course races Forrest broke the school record in the 1650 free with his B-Cut time of 15:03.30 — securing a first place finish. Teammate Eyebergen came in second behind him with a time of 15:18.99, putting him at No. 10 on the all-time list and also posting a B-Cut.

The 200 back saw an SMU tie, with Jack Easton and Rob McCall both finishing in 1:43.83. The pair met the B-Cut standard by .77.

In the 100 free, Chris Mykkanen touched the wall in 43:17. This was another B-Cut for the Mustangs and put him at No. 4 on the all-time school performances sheet. Teammate Sage Sungail finished the same event in 43:56, meeting the B-Cut standard and breaking the No. 9 spot on the SMU all-time list.

In the diving well, Tyler Coffey finished fourth on 1 meter with a final score of 309.95. John Dymond also represented SMU, posting a score of 283.55 to earn eighth.

The annual SMU Invite concluded with the 400 free relay. Mykkanen, Lance Butler, Kristaps Mikelsons and Sage Sungail combined to touch the wall in 2:52.28 — a new pool record.

Up Next

The Mustangs will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. on Tuesday, Jan. 9 to face off against North Carolina in SMU's first away meet of the season.
