Boston Results & New Mexico Results
The Mustangs walked away from this weekend with seven new personal bests and several new top-10 SMU performances to end the regular indoor season in both Boston and Albuquerque. The Mustangs also put out some new season's best marks, which will move them up in the conference rankings.
"There are a number of highlights from the weekend," Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said. "In Boston, the women ran tough with multiple athletes walking away with a PB. In Albuquerque, the group moved the needle on their individual performances with PBs and improved standings on the conference list."
At Boston University's David Hemery Valentine Invitational, the 3,000 held a number of new personal best times for the Mustangs, including Maddie Hulcy's time of 9:42.00, Kendall Saeger's 9:56.52, and Lior Kremer's 10:02.21. Hulcy's time placed her in 10th for the fastest 3,000-meter races in SMU history.
"This was a challenging race after a hard week of training, so I'm happy with my performance," Hulcy said. "I think we had great races all around and the group is training and performing far better than we did at this time last year."
Leoni Mierswa also achieved a personal best time in Boston in the mile with her time of 4:51.35, which was also good enough to place her at seventh on SMU's all-time mile performances. Macey Hilton ran a time of 5:01.25 in the mile and 2:13.43 in the 800.
At the Don Kirby Elite Indoor meet in Albuquerque, Funminiyi Olajide improved her best mark in the long jump with a jump of 6.19 meters – good for third in a large field of athletes. This improves her second-place mark in SMU history by .02 meters. Sophomore Maykayla Jackson was able to tie her season's best jump of 5.57 meters in the long jump and improve her best mark of the year in the triple jump with a distance of 11.81 meters.
Freshman Nea Sanders also had a big weekend with personal best times in both the 60-meter hurdles and the 200. She placed 10th in the hurdles with a time of 8.71 and 42nd in the 200 with a time of 25.10.
Senior Whitney Williams ran her best time of the year in the 400 with a time of 55.97. Headed into conference, Williams is 13th in the American.
"Any improvement is a step in the right direction, and I'm just excited for what is to come," Williams said. "Conference will be a good opportunity to run against some great competition and hopefully execute my races to the best of my ability. Conference weekend will be a great weekend for the whole team!"
Williams was also a member of the 4x400 this weekend, which also ran a season's best time of 3:46.71 -- good enough for 10th in SMU history and sixth in the conference. The relay also consisted of Sanders, Camryn McPhaul and Emily Waller.
The Mustangs currently have 21 top-20 times within the AAC and have two weeks of training before the championship meet begins on February 24th.
"It's really exciting to just keep setting higher goals for every meet, and that continues into conference," Hulcy said. "There is a really positive energy from the whole team, and we are ready to get out there and compete. I just want to give this my all and see what I can do!"
