Mustangs Rank Fifth In Texas Following 2022-23 Season

Jun 9

DALLAS- The SMU women's tennis team has been ranked fifth in the Texas Region by the ITA, announced Friday afternoon. The Mustangs finish the season with a 16-9 overall record. They earned a bid for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2011 due to winning the American Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Championship. SMU became the first team in tournament history to win all of its singles matches in straight sets without dropping a doubles set all tournament. The Mustangs became only the second team in tournament history to not allow a team point in the tournament. Two of the four teams ranked above the Mustangs are ranked in the top 10 nationally. These include No. 3 Texas A&M and No. 7 Texas.

In addition to the Mustangs' team ranking, two players are ranked in the top 20 individually for the region. After a notable senior season, Hadley Doyle finds herself ranked at No. 9. Doyle went 28-8 overall, with a 13-4 dual match record, winning the AAC Player of the Year. Doyle is currently ranked as the No. 84 ranked player in the country in the final ITA rankings. Fellow Mustang, Taylor Johnson is ranked No. 18, having played primarily at line No. 2 this season. Johnson held a 13-4 dual match record including a 10-match win streak to close out the season. Johnson was named the AAC Championships' Most Outstanding Performer, after she closed out a 5-0 combined record in the Mustangs' three matches, she was the first to finish in singles in the semifinals and final victories.

Johnson and Jackie Nylander came in as the sixth ranked doubles team in the region. The duo played all of their matches at line No. 1 and went 6-5 in dual matches together.
