INDIANAPOLIS (SMU) – SMU Men's Swimming graduate students
Jack Hoagland and
Danny Kovac wrapped up the final day of the NCAA Championship in style on Saturday. The duo picked up All-America honors in each event they competed in.
The Mustangs finished 18th with a team score of 59 points, giving them their best finish at the championship in nearly two decades when they placed 14th in 2008.
Arizona State won its first-ever National Championship with a team score of 523.5.
Kovac got things going by setting a program record in during the trials portion in the morning in the 200 fly, setting a new program record at 1:40.93 while winning his heat.
The Colorado native wrapped up his collegiate career with a time of 1:41.17 in the consolation final, good for fourth place and securing honorable mention All-America honors for the second time in four days.
Hoagland added to his legacy by crushing his own record in the 1650 free, posting a new program-best mark of 14:39.19, securing his fourth All-America honor at the championship as he placed sixth. The graduate student's 1000-yard out time of 8:50.43 also broke his previous program record set earlier this spring.
In the final event of the evening, the team of
Chris Mykkanen,
Lance Butler,
Colin Feehery and
Danny Kovac set another program record with a time of 2:50.39 in the 400 free relay, finishing 20th in the talented field. Mykkanen delivered a personal-best time of 42.76 in the first 100 out.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT RELAY FINALS
The 800 Free Relay team of
Jack Hoagland,
Chris Mykkanen,
Jack Forrest and
Colin Feehery finished 15th on day one of the NCAA Championship on Wednesday at the IU Natatorium.
The team finished with a time of 6:14.35 in the second timed final, setting a new program record. The 15th-place finish gave the team All-America Honorable Mention honors for the event.
The Mustangs scored four points for the finish, the first time they have scored at the NCAA Championship since 2013.
Future Atlantic Coast Conference foe Cal took first in the event with an NCAA-record time of 6:02.26.
Hoagland opened things up for SMU with of 1:32.47 going out, shattering his previous program record he had in the 200 free.
Mykkanen followed with a time of 1:33.92.
Forrest, in the third spot, posted a time of 1:33.52.
Feehery closed it out for SMU, going 1:34.44 for the final 200 yards.
