Mustangs Repeat As AAC Champions

Apr 17

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. (SMU) – SMU women's golf repeated as American Athletic Conference Champions with a come-from-behind victory on Wednesday at Southern Hills Golf Club.

The Mustangs won back-to-back conference titles for the first time in program history thanks to a strong comeback performance. SMU came into the day in third place trailing South Florida by nine strokes.  By midround, the Mustangs had drawn even with South Florida and only trailed Tulsa by two strokes. The Mustangs drew even with the Golden Hurricane with 3-6 holes to play and took their first lead with three holes remaining. SMU pushed the lead to two by the end of the day securing its conference crown.

SMU became the first AAC team to repeat since Houston in 2018 and 2019. The Mustangs posted the fifth lowest 54 hole score in SMU history with their 21-under performance. It was the second lowest by any team at the AAC Championship behind SMU's 25 under showing last season.

Emily Odwin gained five spots on the leaderboard in the final round to finish in a tie for fifth place. Odwin shot a three-under 33 on the back nine to shoot her up the standings.  The finish gave the sophomore four top 10 finishes in seven starts this season.

Also in fifth, Mackenzie Lee shot three-under on the final day. She had just one bogey on the day to give her another top 10 finish in her career. The North Little Rock, Arkansas native now has 15 top 10 finishes in her two year career in just 24 starts.

Ellie Szeryk joined Lee and Odwin in fifth place. She carded a 74 on the final day. Szeryk carded 69 and 68 in the first two rounds to put herself squarely in contention for the team title.

Ashley Chow surged up the leaderboard with her best round of the tournament. Chow moved up 13 spots into a tie for 10th. She shot a 67 including 32 on an impressive back nine.

Tess Davenport shot under par to move up six spots into a tie for 21st. She finished the tournament at four over par.

The win gave the Mustangs five tournament titles this season, one off the record they set last season.

The Mustangs earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship Regional with their victory.  The selection show is slated for Wednesday, April 24 on Golf Channel at 1 p.m. CT.
