DALLAS (SMU) – SMU women's golf won the Texas Showdown Presented by Veritex Bank with two match play victories on Tuesday at Dallas Athletic Club.
The fourth-seeded Mustangs faced off against top-seeded Baylor in one of four match ups and two semifinals. In their first match play competition of the year, SMU jumped out to a lead it would never relinquish. Quickly, the Mustangs were up 3-1-1 with leads from
Ellie Szeryk,
Tess Davenport and
Ashley Chow. Odwin would pull ahead in her match and bring the final score to 4-1.
Davenport put on the strongest performance with a 6&5 victory. She won her first two holes to quickly lead the match. She would string together more wins until she led by five with six to play. A birdie on her 13
th hole solidified her win.
Chow won each of the first four holes in her match. She would coast to a 5&4 victory. Szeryk won her first two holes and would lead by as many as six before finishing out her 4&3 win. Odwin was neck-and-neck with her opponent during the front nine but would distance herself in the back nine, winning 2up.
Mackenzie Lee would lose her match 5&4. In a potential tie breaking match,
June Song won 3&2.
The Mustangs faced No. 2 seed Maryland in the final. The team went unbeaten in the final, finishing with a final score of 4-0-1.
Ashley Chow went 2-0 on the day with a 4&3 victory over Kanpai of Maryland. Chow built up a solid three stroke lead in the first eight holes.
Mackenzie Lee's day was highlighted by a hole in one on No. 16. She would win her match 4&3 starting off with a birdie and never looking back.
Emily Odwin found herself in a late deficit before a charge pushed her ahead 2&1.
Ellie Szeryk birdied 18 to break the stalemate in her match and win 1up.
Tess Davenport won her final hole to draw even in her match.
The Mustangs took home their fourth tournament title of the season, a mark that ranks second in SMU history behind last season's six titles.
Next up, the Mustangs look to defend their title at the 2024 AAC Championship. The tournament runs April 15-17 at Southern Hills Golf Club in Brooksville, Fla.
