TEMPE, Arizona (SMU/Intercollegiate Tennis Association) — The SMU women's tennis program achieved their highest final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) ranking since 2011, finishing No. 34 in the final team rankings that were released on Wednesday by the ITA.
This marks the highest final ranking under head coach Jeff Nevolo in his five seasons at the helm.
SMU has finished in the top 40 for the past three years, the longest run by the Mustangs since 2009-11 .
SMU earned its second consecutive American Athletic Conference (AAC) Championship in their 4-0 sweep over Memphis back on April 21.
The Mustangs traveled to Stillwater, Okla. to compete in the NCAA Tournament for a second straight season earlier this month. SMU defeated then-No. 33 Alabama — 4-3 — in the first round before falling against top-seeded Oklahoma State in round two on May 5.
The Mustangs accumulated an overall record of 14-12, highlighted by three wins over ranked opponents.
SMU also mostly swept the high AAC yearly accolades with Nevolo being named the AAC Coach of the Year in back-to-back years. The season also included the AAC Championship Most Outstanding Player, Lana Mavor, AAC Player of the Year, Taylor Johnson, and two AAC All-Conference Selections.
