Women's Golf Heads To South Carolina For The Briars Creek Invitational

SMU women's golf takes on the Briars Creek Invitational in Charleston, South Carolina Sunday through Tuesday.

The tournament was originally scheduled for a Monday start but was moved up due to inclement weather on Monday. The 17-team field features 13 teams in the top 100 and six top 50 teams according to the latest Scoreboard rankings. Along with the Mustangs and hosts Charleston, the field includes Campbell, East Carolina, Florida State, Furman, Iowa, Kent State, Maryland, Miami (FL), Minnesota, NC State, Old Dominion, Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers and Tulsa.

The Mustangs won the Briars Creek Invitational back in 2022-23. Yunxuan (Michelle) Zhang captured the individual title. The Mustangs did not participate in 2023-24.

Last time out, the Mustangs put together a top four finish at the Chevron Collegiate down in Houston. Mackenzie Lee and Celine Chen both finished in a tie for third. Chen played the entire tournament bogey free. Lee recorded her 19th top 10 showing of her career. Emily Odwin finished in a tie for 22nd.

The Mustangs came in at No. 32 in the Golf Channel's preseason ranking. Mackenzie Lee was named preseason honorable mention All-American by the channel as well.
 
-Celine Chen is averaging 71.44 across her last nine rounds with a third place showing her last time out.
 
-Mackenzie Lee has the best career scoring average in SMU history with 71.52 strokes per round. Her 71.61 scoring average this season ranks third in SMU history behind her season last year (1st-71.32) and Yunxuan (Michelle) Zhang in 2022-23 (2nd-71.38).
 
-Emily Odwin needs one more round to qualify for the SMU career scoring record.  Her record of 72.61 would rank third behind Lee and Ellie Szeryk.
 
WINTER SEASON
Mackenzie Lee received an elite invitation to participate in the 2025 Augusta National Women's Amateur this January. The winner of the tournament receives invitations to the next five ANWAs, that year's US Women's Open, Women's British Open, and any USGA, R&A and PGA of American amateur events for which she is otherwise eligible prior to the next ANWA. Lee also finished in 13th at the Patriot All-America over the break. June Song would finish in 63rd. Jingan "Annie" Huang and Celine Chen both participated in the Australian Master of the Amateurs tournament. Emily Odwin finished in second at the Women's Amateur Latin America tournament shooting three under through four rounds. Odwin also finished in second at the Southwest Airlines Showcase at Cedar Crest.
 
 
MACKENZIE LEE
Mackenzie Lee leads the team with a 71.62 scoring average through six events. Lee has shot 10 of 18 rounds at or under par this season. She finished tied for the SMU lead at the Chevron Collegiate with a third place showing. She was tops on the team with a 21st place finish at the Stanford Intercollegiate. She led the team in the first event of the season, the Cougar Classic. She carded three under par rounds and finished in a tie for second at six-under par. Her career scoring average of 71.52 is the lowest in SMU history with a minimum of 45 rounds. She is third all-time at SMU with 291 birdies and needs 13 more to move into second place. Her 50 rounds of par or better are four more than the next closest in Mustang history. Last season, Lee led the team with a 71.32 scoring average during the season, good for 0.68 below par on average. The North Little Rock, Arkansas native was named all-conference for the second straight season. She set the mark for the lowest scoring average in program history. Lee has a low round of 62 and has 12 rounds in the 60s last season. Lee ranked No. 32 individually in the country. She finished in a tie for sixth at the NCAA Regional starting off play with an opening round 68. During the Regional, she set the career record for rounds of par or better with 47; Lee finished in the top five at the AAC Championship with a low round of 67. The sophomore finished in 12th at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. Lee finished in fourth at the Florida State Match Up. She shot rounds of 69, 68 and 71 to finish the tournament at eight under. The North Little Rock, Arkansas native finished in a tie for ninth as the Mustangs captured the team title at The Show. Lee finished in 6th at the Chevron Collegiate. In the first event of the spring, Lee had her best collegiate finish with a second-place showing at the Collegiate Invitational at Guadalajara. In the final event of the fall, Lee led the Mustangs with a one-over showing at the Landfall Tradition. At the Jim West Challenge, Lee finished in a tie for fourth and broke her own SMU 18-hole record with a 10-under showing in round three. Lee started her 2023-24 season with an eighth place showing at the Dick McGuire. She carded a 68 on the final day to move up 12 spots on the leaderboard into her ninth career top 10 finish.
 
JUNE SONG
 
Song is fifth on the team with a scoring average of 75.94 through six events with one coming as an individual. She finished in a tie for 22nd at the Red Raider Invitational thanks to a 71 in the middle round. She finished the 2023-24 season with a 74.57 scoring average in 28 rounds.  Song finished in the top 20 at the Texas Showdown and won her lone match play pairing. Song finished second on the team with a 34th-place showing at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. The Australian carded a 69 in round two to help lead the Mustangs to a victory at the Chevron Collegiate. Song finished in the top half of the field with a 36th place finish at the Collegiate Invitational at Guadalajara. The sophomore finished in a tie for 28th as the Mustangs won the Jim West Challenge. In her Mustang debut, Song finished in 66th at the Dick McGuire.
 
EMILY ODWIN
Odwin is second on the team with a 72.72 scoring average through six events. Last time out, she finished in 22nd at the Chevron Collegiate. She finished in 11th at the Collegiate Invitational in Guadalajara. She finished in a tie for ninth at the Red Raider Invitational, her eighth top 20 finish in her first 11 starts as a Mustang. At the season-opening Cougar Classic, she finished in a tie for 18th moving up 12 spots during the final round with a two-under score. In her first year on the Hilltop, Odwin had a 72.54 scoring average for nine events. She has recorded par or better rounds 13 times in 26 rounds. Odwin led the Mustangs at the NCAA Championship. Odwin finished in a tie for 17th as the Mustangs advanced out of the NCAA Regional. Odwin finished in a tie for fifth at the AAC Championship and was named all-conference. The sophomore won both her match play pairings at the Texas Showdown, 2Up and 2&1. She finished sixth in three consecutive appearances from Feb. 26 to March 16. Odwin carded a 67 in the middle round to finish in sixth at the Florida State Match Up. Odwin finished in sixth place at The Show. She shot par or better in every round. Odwin finished in a tie for sixth at the Chevron Collegiate. She shot 70 or better in every round. In her debut appearance in Guadalajara, Odwin finished in a tie for 26th. She opened her collegiate career with an eagle on her first hole.
 
CELINE CHEN
Chen has a 73.28 scoring average through six events in 2024-25. Chen had her best showing as a Mustang at the Chevron Collegiate with a third-place finish. She played the entire tournament bogey free. Chen finished in 23rd at the Collegiate Invitational to secure back-to-back top 25 showings. The Perth, Western Australia native finished in a tie for sixth at the Charles Schwab Fall Collegiate carding even par each round.  Chen had her first eagle in the third round of the Stanford Intercollegiate. She had her best career finish to date the Red Raider Invitational with a 20th place showing. Chen had a 75.75 scoring average in six rounds during the 2023-24 season. She finished in a tie for 37th in her first appearance as a Mustang. She carded a 71 in the final round to move 24 spots up the leaderboard. Chen had a 75.75 scoring average in six rounds. NEWCOMERS
AMELIE KUMAR
Kumar finished in 24th, her best career showing at the Charles Schwab Fall Invite. Kumar finished in 50th in her first event of her collegiate career, the Cougar Classic. She boasts a 75.20 scoring average through five events.  Kumar hails from Lausanne, Switzerland. She begins her first year on the Hilltop in 2024-25. Kumar has been a part of the Swiss National Team for the past two years. She represented her country on some of the highest stages of junior golf. She's played in many tournaments across Europe and enjoyed competing on different types of courses at the highest junior amateur level.
 
JINGAN "ANNIE" HUANG
Huang has a 78.00 scoring average through six rounds. She made her first appearance as a Mustang at the Collegiate Invitational. She finished in a tie for 56th.

 

 LAST SEASON…
The Mustangs are coming off a season where they won five tournament titles and advanced to the NCAA Championship for the second straight season. They return three starters from the 2023-24 squad, Mackenzie Lee, June Song and Emily Odwin. The Mustangs set the single-season scoring record at SMU last season and broke all four major program tournament records at the Jim West Challenge. They won back-to-back conference titles with a dramatic come-from-behind victory at the AAC Championship and would finish in a tie for second at the NCAA Regional.
