DALLAS, Texas (SMU) -- The Mustangs are prepped and ready for the competition of their first Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which will take place this weekend beginning on Thursday, May 15th. Head Coach A'Havahla Haynes said the team is looking forward to the challenge of the championship meet.
"The women have prepared all year for this competition, knowing they will have to go beyond the usual limits," Haynes said. "Doing so will continue to rewrite the record books and redefine what is possible for SMU Track and Field."
The Mustangs will travel 13 athletes to represent SMU in North Carolina. Freshman Jasmine Franklin will make her outdoor championship debut in both the 100 and the 200. In her first year as a Mustang, Franklin has already broken into the SMU Top 10 in both events.
Kelis Jules – another freshman who has quickly made her mark at SMU – and Nea Sanders will compete in the 100m hurdles for the Mustangs. Heading into the championship meet, Sanders's time of 13.46 is ranked eighth in the conference with Jules in 13th. The pair are the third and fourth fastest to ever run the event for SMU with their sights set on continuing to climb those record books.
Fellow hurdlers Kirin Chacchia and Emily Waller, a senior, will race in the 400m hurdles. Chacchia has run 58.52 this season – placing her second in the SMU record books and ranking eighth in the conference. Waller is ranked 16th with 1:00.09.
Macey Hilton and Leoni Mierswa are ready to take on the competition in the 1,500. Mierswa is second in the SMU record books with the fastest time of her career and this season being 4:19.90. Hilton has run 4:24.24 this season – with her time dropping each race.
Mierswa will also represent SMU along with Kaitlyn Gearin in the 5,000. The seniors are both in the SMU record books at this distance and will continue to leave a legacy in the event this weekend.
Competing in the 10,000, Emily Little has run 35:31.90 and will be the third distance pony traveling to the championships.
In her final season as a Mustang, Raelyn Roberson will compete in the long jump. The veteran is no stranger to championship meets and is ready to compete. She jumped a season's best mark in the last regular season meet of the year, only getting better as the season has gone on.
Gabriella Ayiteyfio will compete in her final conference championship meet as a Mustang this weekend in the heptathlon. The senior currently sits fifth in the record books for SMU.
The team is also slated to compete in the 4x100 and the 4x400.
