ACC PRESEASON POLL & HONORS: Senior guard
Boopie Miller was selected preseason All-ACC Second Team and the Mustangs were picked sixth in the vote by a select media panel. Miller received the highest vote total of any member of the preseason All-ACC Second Team (27). The teams picked in front of the Mustangs were [6/6] Duke, [20/19] Louisville, [14/15] North Carolina, NC State and [16/16] Virginia. Miller was All-ACC Third Team last season after averaging 13.2 points (26th ACC), 5.5 assists (4th ACC, 33rd NCAA), 2.9 rebounds and 1.6 steals (9th ACC) with a 2.50 assist-to-turnover ratio (2nd ACC, 41st NCAA). He also had a pair of game-winning shots, including a right-wing 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds left in a 54-52 win at Virginia. He was the Acrisure Holiday Invitational MVP after SMU defeated Washington State in the championship.
NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE (11-2): SMU went 11-2 in non-conference, the most regular-season wins outside leagu play since 2015-16 (12-0). The Mustangs had nine non-conference home games, including a home game with Butler on Nov. 15 (W, 87-85). SMU also faced four SEC teams beginning with a visit to Mississippi State on Nov. 28 (W, 87-81 ot) and then [17/16] Vanderbilt in the ACC/SEC Challenge on Dec. 3 (L, 88-69). Texas A&M was next in the Hoop Hype XL matchup at the College Park Center in Arlington, Texas on Dec. 7 (W, 93-80 ot) followed by the Compete 4 Cause Classic versus [rv/rv] LSU in New Orleans on Dec. 13 (L, 89-77).
LAST GAME (L, 82-75 at [6/6] Duke on Jan. 10): DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -- Isaiah Evans scored 21 points and had a critical 3-pointer with 1:15 left to help No. 6 Duke beat No. 24 SMU 82-75 on Saturday. Evans slipped to the left side for the 3-pointer off a feed from freshman star Cam Boozer to make it 76-70, a repeat of the play that sent Duke past Florida when he hit a late 3 here in December. Patrick Ngongba II tied his career high in scoring with 17 points for Duke (15-1, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), while Boozer had 18 points — including muscling up his own interior basket to give Duke a 73-68 lead shortly before Evans' big shot. Duke shot 49%.
Jaden Toombs had 23 points on 10-for-12 shooting to lead the Mustangs (12-4, 1-2). The Mustangs had to play this one without leading scorer
Boopie Miller, a 20.6-point scorer who was a game-time decision because of illness. But SMU scored the game's first 11 points and gave Duke fits all day, shooting 56.6% and thrice getting within one possession in the final 4 1/2 minutes. The Mustangs' biggest problem was turnovers; they had 21 that led to 21 points for the Blue Devils.
SERIES VS VIRGINIA TECH: The programs played for the first time during SMU's inaugural season in the ACC, winning 81-75 in Blacksburg on Feb. 5, 2025.
LAST SEASON VS VIRGINIA TECH (W, 81-75 at VT on Feb. 5): BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) --
Matt Cross scored 21 points,
Chuck Harris had 20, and SMU held off a late rally by Virginia Tech for an 81-75 victory. There were eight ties and seven lead changes in the first 14-plus minutes of the second half and SMU took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Harris with 5:49 remaining. He hit another key 3-pointer 3 1/2 minutes later and Cross also hit from deep for a 77-68 lead with 1:23 left. Virginia Tech then rallied with a 3-pointer from Jaden Schutt and two free throws each by Tobi Lawal and Ben Hammond while the Mustangs had a missed 3 and a turnover. Now trailing 77-75 with 20 seconds left, the Hokies put
Boopie Miller on the line and he made both ends of the one-and-one. Hammond missed a jumper and Cross closed out the win with two more free throws. Samet Yigitoglu scored 12 points, backup guard
Kario Oquendo 11, and Miller 10 for SMU. Mylyjael Poteat had 15 points and 10 rebounds, Schutt scored 15 points and reserve Ben Burnham scored 12 for the Hokies. Neither team led by more than six points in the first half. SMU took a 9-8 lead with 15 minutes remaining and did not give it up until Brandon Rechsteiner hit a 3-pointer to put the Hokies ahead 35-32 with about 90 seconds remaining in the half. Cross answered with a 3 to make it 35-all at halftime.
A PLACE IN THE POLL: SMU is receiving votes in the AP Top 25 and USA Today Coaches Poll. In the Jan. 5 polls, SMU was No. 24 in the AP Top 25 and No. 25 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The Mustangs also garnered votes in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll on Dec. 1 and Dec. 8. HEAD COACH ANDY ENFIELD... is in his second season at SMU after being named SMU's Head Men's Basketball on April 1, 2024. In his first season on the Hilltop, he led the Mustangs to a 24-11 overall record and earned a No. 1 seed in the NIT. The Mustangs went 13-7 in the program's inaugural season in the ACC to tie for fourth. SMU signed the nation's fourth-ranked high school recruiting class, which is the best in program history.
Enfield burst onto the coaching scene in 2013 when, in his second year as a head coach, he guided Florida Gulf Coast to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Following that success, he was hired by the Southern California (USC), where he led the Trojans to five NCAA Tournaments, including a run to the Elite Eight in 2021. He came to SMU after 11 seasons at USC, where he compiled a 220-147 record. The Trojans set a school single-season win record and posted the most wins in program history over two-year, three-year, four-year, five-year, six-year, seven-year and eight-year periods. Enfield's 220 wins ranks third on USC's all-time wins list.
Over his final seven seasons at USC, the Trojans had eight players selected in the NBA Draft, tied for the fifth-most by any program in the country, with Evan Mobley going No. 3 overall in the 2021 NBA Draft and Onyeka Okongwu being selected No. 6 in the 2020 Draft. USC was one of three teams to have had at least one player selected in six of the last seven NBA Drafts. In total, 11 players during Enfield's time at USC have made the NBA.
