The previous matchup was in the 2014 NIT semifinal at Madison Square Garden with SMU advancing to the champiosnhip via a 65-59 decision. Clemson won the first meeting by a count of 67-51, on Dec. 18, 1970, in the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville, Tennesee. (+ officially 0-3, win in 2013-14 vacated)
LAST SEASON VS CLEMSON: (L, 57-54 in ACC Quarterfinal) CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Chase Hunter scored 21 points, Jaeden Zackery added 11 points and No. 10 Clemson battled back to beat SMU 57-54 on Thursday night for its ninth straight win to reach the Atlantic Coast Conference semifinals. Ian Schieffelin chipped in with nine points and 12 rebounds for the Tigers (27-5).
Matt Cross led SMU (23-10) with 13 points, while
Boopie Miller had 10. SMU led most of the second half, but Viktor Lakhin's lane jumper gave the Tigers a 52-51 lead with 4:50 left in the game. SMU had a chance to tie or take the lead after Hunter missed a 3 with 17 seconds left with the shot clock winding down. The Mustangs called timeout with 12.5 seconds left, but
Chuck Harris missed a corner 3. There was a battle for the rebound before the ball went out of bounds. It was initially ruled the ball went off a Clemson player, but after reviewing the play officials ruled SMU touched the ball last. Hunter was fouled on the inbounds play and made a free throw with 2.1 seconds. Cross' full-court heave at the buzzer fell short. Cross picked up his fourth foul midway through the second half, but the Mustangs didn't waiver and stayed right with the Tigers until the end. Clemson starting guard Dillon Hunter appeared to jam a finger late in the first half and did not return. (L, 79-69 on Feb. 22): DALLAS (AP) -- Jaeden Zackery had 19 points, including a career-best five 3-pointers before halftime, plus six rebounds, seven assists and five steals to help No. 18 Clemson beat SMU 79-69 Saturday. Chuck Harris scored 16 points, and
Matt Cross and
B.J. Edwards had 12 each for the Mustangs (20-7, 11-5). Clemson ended the first half on a 7-2 run after SMU took its only lead of the game at 30-29, then scored the first nine points of the second half. The Tigers' largest lead was 18 points.
Boopie Miller, who leads the team averaging 13.4 points and 5.7 assists per game, missed his third consecutive game with a bruised left foot. Zackery's mid-range miss at the 24-second buzzer early in the second half was rebounded by Lakhin. That led to Hunter's 3-pointer amid the 9-0 run opening the second half. Clemson, 61st in Division I averaging nine 3-pointers per game, matched that total with 6:17 left in the half. The Tigers hit 14, matching their season high, on 29 shots.

HEAD COACH ANDY ENFIELD... is in his second season at SMU after being named SMU's Head Men's Basketball on April 1, 2024. In his first season on the Hilltop, he led the Mustangs to a 24-11 overall record and earned a No. 1 seed in the NIT. The Mustangs went 13-7 in the program's inaugural season in the ACC to tie for fourth. SMU signed the nation's fourth-ranked high school recruiting class, which is the best in program history.
Enfield burst onto the coaching scene in 2013 when, in his second year as a head coach, he guided Florida Gulf Coast to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Following that success, he was hired by the Southern California (USC), where he led the Trojans to five NCAA Tournaments, including a run to the Elite Eight in 2021. He came to SMU after 11 seasons at USC, where he compiled a 220-147 record. The Trojans set a school single-season win record and posted the most wins in program history over two-year, three-year, four-year, five-year, six-year, seven-year and eight-year periods. Enfield's 220 wins ranks third on USC's all-time wins list.
Over his final seven seasons at USC, the Trojans had eight players selected in the NBA Draft, tied for the fifth-most by any program in the country, with Evan Mobley going No. 3 overall in the 2021 NBA Draft and Onyeka Okongwu being selected No. 6 in the 2020 Draft. USC was one of three teams to have had at least one player selected in six of the last seven NBA Drafts. In total, 11 players during Enfield's time at USC have made the NBA.
