Mustangs Show Off Depth, Balance Ahead of California Trip

Stat sheets don't get much more balanced than what the SMU men's basketball team put together in Saturday's 94-70 win against Boston College.

Seven players scored at least eight points, with six in double figures. Five players had at least five rebounds, and three players had at least four assists.

"We went through a lull in the first half, took some tough shots, the ball wasn't moving. Everybody that caught it stuck for a little bit," SMU head coach Andy Enfield said. "Once we got out of that, we went back to our offense the way we're supposed to play and have been playing most of the season, and it was really good."

The combination of SMU's offense being stuck and the Eagles making more 3-pointers in the first half than they usually do in a game had the Mustangs trailing by seven with 2:45 left in the first half.

They scored the final 11 points before the break to take a four-point lead into halftime. SMU then came out and opened the second half on a 14-6 run to get the lead to double digits and never looked back.

SMU finished with 22 assists on 34 made shots — led by Boopie Miller with seven, Jaron Pierre Jr. with six and B.J. Edwards with four.

"We're a very good offense when we share the basketball and when we push the pace," Enfield said. "Our one-on-one, our playmaking and our decision-making has really improved when we get sped up. That's the biggest thing. Turnovers usually happen when players get sped up. Our players have really done a nice job of improving all season in that, so we can play as fast as we want to without turning the ball over. And that was a big key."

Jermaine O'Neal Jr. may have epitomized that more than the rest. He scored a team-high 16 points in 21 minutes off the bench. It's his second-highest point total this season, behind his season-high of 21 against Cal St. Fullerton.

It nearly doubled his previous high in ACC play of nine against North Carolina State. O'Neal knew he was capable of putting that kind of performance together. He just had to do it.

He did on Saturday.

"I just try to play within the offense. I don't really want to force any bad shots or anything," O'Neal said. "Everything was good rhythm or quick off the bounce. … It feels great. I've been waiting for my one, like, big-time ACC game, because I've been solid but haven't had that kind of breakout scoring game, so it just felt amazing."

While O'Neal's highlight-reel play came as a shot hit off the rim and he went up and dunked the putback, he was solid all-around for the Mustangs.

"He's really improved his decision-making, and he was putting the ball on the floor," Enfield said. "He was making plays for his teammates, he scored it when he had to, and then defensively, he was really good."

The Mustangs also dominated in the paint, outscoring BC 46-20. Samet Yiğitoğlu and Jaden Toombs did a lot of that damage, combining for 28 points on 12-of-15 shooting. Toombs was perfect on his six attempts inside the 3-point line, and Yiğitoğlu was 6-of-7, marking his fifth straight game shooting at least 50% from the floor and the sixth time in seven games.

"To get that productivity out of our big guys is impressive," Enfield said. "... That's what we expect out of guys if you're going to shoot around the rim. They're both getting better finishing with both hands, knowing where the defense is and where the help is coming from so they're not turning the ball over. When we can get them the ball and they make quick moves, they're both very good."

Meanwhile, Boston College struggled to score inside the 3-point line. The Eagles were just 12-of-34 on their two-point attempts, something the Mustangs expect with their size. Yiğitoğlu and Toombs are getting more and more used to playing on the court together every game, and they have the production to prove it.

Toombs has scored at least nine points in four of the last five, and Yiğitoğlu has done it in five straight and six of his last seven, including a double-double against Notre Dame.

"We dominate in the paint every game, so we've just got to keep dominating," Yiğitoğlu said. "Nobody can stop us in the paint, especially when I'm playing with Toombs. I mean, I'm 7-2, and he's like 6-10, 6-11, so if I miss a shot, I know that he will go get it. If he missed the shot, I know that I'll go get it."

While the Mustangs have had games where players have individually taken over the offense, a balanced attack is one that's hard to stop. That's what SMU got on Saturday.

Along with O'Neal, Yiğitoğlu and Toombs, Edwards (15), Pierre (13) and Miller (11) also scored in double figures, and Corey Washington finished with eight points.

Now they will try to take that on the road as the Mustangs travel to Cal and Stanford this week. It's a trip that has been difficult for most teams to make over the two years they have been in the ACC.

Only Duke and Clemson have pulled off the sweep this year, while Wake Forest was the only team to do it a season ago.
