DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's soccer program delivered one of its best defensive performances of the season as the Mustangs shut out No.6 Stanford 0-0 on Friday in Washburne Stadium.

The Mustangs (5-3-3, 0-2-1 ACC) were led by goalkeeper Aubrey Brown, who finished the game with a season-high nine saves, stifling the high-powered Cardinal (7-2-2, 1-2-1 ACC) offense, which rattled off 26 shots in the match.

It was SMU's sixth home shutout season as Mustangs remained unbeaten at home this season (5-0-3). It is the longest home unbeaten streak since an eight-match unbeaten streak that carried over two seasons (2021-22) and the longest in a single season since 2004 (7-0-1).

Stanford returned six players to the lineup after the U20 World Cup that began on Sept. 5, including goalkeeper Caroline Birkel, who ended the game with four saves.

The Mustangs generated quality looks throughout the match as SMU's never-quit attitude shined bright against the Cardinal. Julianne Richter, Brooke Bunton and Kaia Samuelsen Elverum each had great opportunities to score but just couldn't get one past the Cardinal goalkeeper.

SMU kept pace with Stanford in the first half, trading shots back and forth. Richter had a golden opportunity in the 33rd minute, dodging a defender on a breakaway and getting a shot on goal, but the Cardinal saved it.

After a scoreless first half, Stanford increased its attack, but the Mustangs stood tall and denied every Cardinal chance while continuing to create their own. The Mustangs' efforts were rewarded with a point in the conference standings against a top-tier opponent.

SMU brought their physical attitude to the match and drew 14 fouls on the Cardinal. It was only the third time No. 6 Stanford was shut out this season and the only time it was shut out with its full roster.
